Red Gold . Innovators & Pioneers . James Blundell | PBS
James Blundell, proponent of physiological concepts, teacher of the conservative practice of obstetrics, and one of the first to practice blood transfusion in humans, was an eccentric physician of Guy's Hospital.
Blundell's experimental investigations of the response of the peritoneum of animals to surgical interference held considerable interest because of the possibilities for surgical advances generally and for obstetrics and gynecology specifically.
Blundell was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1838, two years after he retired from Guy's Hospital in an irreconcilable dispute with the administration.

In the investigation that ensued, Dr. Denis and colleagues were acquitted of the patient's death when the French courts determined that Mauroy had been poisoned by his wife.
Blundell's interest prompted him to experiment first in the animal laboratory with interspecies transfusion, which led him to the conclusion that transfusing animal blood into humans was inherently unsafe.
Remember that Blundell practiced medicine at a time when blood letting to the extreme was widely accepted as appropriate therapy for most illnesses.

Blood Transfusions--A Long History of Controversy - Jehovah's Witnesses Official Web Site
IN THE winter of 1667, a violent madman named Antoine Mauroy was brought to Jean-Baptiste Denis, eminent physician to King Louis XIV of France.
Denis had the ideal "cure" for Mauroy's mania—a transfusion of calf's blood, which he thought would have a calming effect on his patient.
Even though it was later determined that Mauroy actually died from arsenic poisoning, Denis' experiments with animal blood provoked a heated controversy in France.

When interest in transfusion was revived by James Blundell (5-7) in 1818, it was on the basis of replacement of lost blood in puerperal hemorrhage and after a series of experiments in which he had demonstrated that human blood loses none of its "vital properties" by passage through transfusion equipment.
Blundell failed in his first four desperate attempts to save women on the point of death from postpartal hemorrhage, but he succeeded in five of the next six attempts.
