  Dedalus Press - Denis Devlin
DENIS DEVLIN was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1908 and died in Dublin in 1959.
One of the major figures, and major influences, of modern and modernist Irish poetry, alongside Brian Coffey he was described by Samuel Beckett as "without question the most interestering of the youngest generation of Irish poets".
Introduced by JCC Mays, who regards Devlin's poems as "constructs in which an idea is worked through" (while offering a fascinating insight into the work, including the way in which "lines that push beyond rhyme extend into rhythmical prose"), Collected Poems is an extraordinary book which has, unsurprisingly, become something of a collector's item.

A Broken Line: Denis Devlin and Irish Poetic Modernism:1900621363:Davis, Alex:eCampus.com
Dennis Devlin's (1908-1959) poems have been championed by such Irish admirers as Brian Coffey, Beckett, Kinsella, and Montague, and by such American authors as Tate and Robert Penn Warren.
This first-ever appraisal of Devlin's work, examines the poetry in the context of literary modernism and the poet's own successful career as a diplomat for the Free State and the Republic of Ireland.
The surrealist-inspired early poetry is viewed in the light of the high modernism of Eliot and in relation to the European avant-garde, while the poems of the mid-to late period are read in relation to the American New Criticism.

In the early seventies, Michael Smith judged Coffey to be "as distinguished a poet as any writing in the English language today".
Coffey never found great favor among the Irish literary homeboys, nor did he ever have the luck to be discovered by influential foreign sponsors as Devlin had been taken up by Allen Tate and Robert Penn Warren, and MacGreevy by Wallace Stevens.
To many, the most salient thing about him has been his representative status - a figure associated with the thirties avant-garde movement, a grouchy character on the margins of modern Irish poetry.
