Denitrification is the process of reducing nitrate, a form of nitrogen available for consumption by many groups of organisms, into gaseous nitrogen, which is far less accessible to life forms but makes up the bulk of our atmosphere.
Denitrification and nitrification are parts of the nitrogen cycle.
Denitrification is the second step in the nitrification-denitrification process: the conventional way to remove nitrogen from sewage and municipal wastewater.

Denitrification (the microbial conversion of available nitrogen NO3 to unavailable nitrogen (N2)) is probably the most important nitrogen cycling pathway, because it is one of the few natural processes that is capable of counteracting the process of eutrophication (Kemp et al., 1990).
Sediment denitrification typically occurs in the upper 10 or 20 mm of the sediment (Jorgensen, 1996) and around animal burrows and is primarily controlled by small-scale gradients in labile carbon, nitrogen and oxygen (Figure 1).
