In the 1840s, the area was so mellow that the the composer Felix Mendelssohn - who was staying at 168 Denmark Hill - was so inspired by the tranquillity he penned a piano tribute to its silence.
John Ruskin had lived all around the area, starting off at 28 Herne Hill, then moving to 163 Denmark Hill in 1847 before finally buggering off out of the area in 1872, moaning about the new railways 'spoiling his view'.
Protected by a railing, this is all that remains of a sundial that was in the garden of a house on Denmark Hill.

The station is located on Champion Park (just off the road called Denmark Hill), and was built in 1866.

King's College Hospital first opened in 1840 close to Lincoln's Inn Fields and within two years was treating 1290 inpatients in 120 beds.
Demographic changes in the centre of London had seen a decrease in the numbers of patients in that area and an increase of patients from further afield - notably Camberwell, Peckham and Brixton which were then suburbs on the outskirts of London.
The move to Denmark Hill provided the Hospital with a greenfield-site nearer to its patients.
