		The Arkansas River divides the county, and because early travel across the river was difficult, the county has two seats of government - Ozark, north of the river, and Charleston, south of the river.
		The county lays claim to the first oil strike in Arkansas and in the late 1800's coal was mined, introducing the boomtowns of Branch and Denning.
