Under Archer’s leadership, this year’s conference gave participants a chance to sign a “Covenant for Change” in which they personally pledge to be a part of the 12-month action plan that will follow through on the issues discussed at the conference and find solutions to move the Detroit Region forward.
Archer served two terms as mayor of Detroit from 1994 to 2001 and as president of the National League of Cities during that period.
A graduate of the Detroit College of Law, Archer served as an associate justice on the Michigan Supreme Court from 1986 to 1990 and as president of the American Bar Association in 2003-2004.

Prior to his election, Archer served as a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court from 1985 to 1993, as mayor of Detroit, Michigan from 1994 to 2001.
Archer was a strong supporter and the catalyst for numerous construction projects in downtown Detroit, including new stadiums for the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers respectively.

U.S. District Judge George Steeh appointed Archer, a former Michigan Supreme Court justice and past president of the American Bar Assn., to intercede in two lawsuits filed on behalf of Parks against the record companies of the hip-hop duo OutKast.
In his order, Steeh named Archer as a temporary, independent guardian for Parks to review all litigation files and determine whether she is being fairly represented.
