  Dennis Brain
Dennis showed an interest in his father's instrument from the age of three, but was allowed to play a few notes only on Saturday mornings as a treat.
Brain also had a fine talent for composition, as evidenced by the cadenzas to the fist movements of the third and fourth concertos.
Dennis was truly a colleague of the horn world and the music world in general; he was one of the very best ambassadors for our profession; when he toured with the London Symphony he always took time to visit with other hornists and musicians

 Dennis Brain
This collection of a few of Dennis Brain's many orchestral recordings includes the first CD reissues of the Méhul, Haydn and Rossini.
Dennis Brain's vast discography of orchestral recordings is thoroughly documented in Robert L. Marshall's superb Dennis Brain on Record (Margun Music, Inc. 1996).
Based on his listing of the Royal Philharmonic horn sections during Dennis Brain's tenure as principal it is likely that Ian Beers was 2nd horn in the Cosi aria recorded during the time when the RPO played at Glyndebourne.

Amazon.com: Mozart: Horn Concertos Nos. 1-4: Music: Cecil James,Stephen Waters,Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,Herbert von ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Brain's earlier recordings of #2 (with the Philharmonia under Walter Susskind) and #4 (with the Halle Orchestra, no conductor's name specified) were even more brilliant and stylish than what is heard here.
One year earlier Brain recorded a SUPERB account with Walter Gieseking (one of that great Mozartean's finest performances), James again on bassoon, plus the masterly Philharmonia principals Sidney Sutcliffe (oboe) and Bernard Walton (clarinet).
Dennis Brain wasn't a 'good' French horn player, he was probably the best that there ever was or will be.

But of course I will be there to talk about brain science.
It was a little strange talking about the brain at 7 am, but it was also fun, and there were some excellent questions that I got to pretend to know how to answer.

Perhaps the greatest horn player of all time, Dennis Brain died at the age of 36, but fortunately for music lovers everywhere he left an abundance of recorded works to treasure and savor.
This CD is a collection of 15 pieces recorded by Brain in the 1940s when he was still quite young.
Of course I love Dennis Brain; he inspired me to become a French horn player.

 Backup Brain
The debate was held at Soldier's Field, in front of an all-union, AFL-CIO crowd.
As part of the debate, Dennis Kucinich touted his proud union affiliation as a member of IATSE Local 600; the crowd loved it, of course.
When did Dennis hold a job outside government, much less a union job?

If I had done nothing (or worse, if I'd switched back to being pro-abortion to gain some kind of advantage or benefit like Dennis Kucinich did) then I'd be vulnerable to charges of flip-floppery or a lack of seriousness.
