Cardinal Dougherty is one of 22 high schools of the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
Cardinal Dougherty High School, as part of the school system of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, enrolls students of diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds from urban and suburban areas.
Cardinal Dougherty has implemented a new method of teaching and learning called "Intensive Scheduling." Initial results showed the number of students achieving Honors increasing by more than 40% and the failure rate reduced by more than one half.

 The Bishops of Philadelphia
Cardinal McCloskey had a tie to Philadelphia: his mentor and predecessor, Archbishop John Hughes, one of the more outspoken Catholic voices of the last century anywhere, was a Philadelphia priest and Rector of St. John the Evangelist Church, still one of the great churches of the Archdiocese.
Dennis Joseph Dougherty, Eigth Ordinary and Fourth Archbishop of Philadelphia, was a native son, but his coming as Metropolitan was the start of a new acquaintance with Philadelphia for this young prelate.
Among his accomplishments were the continuation of Cardinal Dougherty's tradition of excellence in Catholic education, and as a memorial to his predecessor, he built Cardinal Dougherty High School, the largest Catholic high school in the world.

During his years as the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Cardinal Dougherty earned the title, "God's Bricklayer." Throughout the ten county acrhdioces he founded or built 110 parishes, 70 churches, 122 grammar schools, three colleges, nine diocesan high schools, fourteen academies, seven hospitals, seven orphanages, seven homes for the aged, and several institutions for various social services.
At the time of his death, Dennis Joseph Dougherty was 85 years old, a Priest for 61 years, Bishop for 48 years, Archbishop of Philadelphia for 33 years and a Cardinal for 30 years.

aint Catharine of Siena Parish was founded on October 8, 1919 when Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia, appointed the Reverend John C. Phelan as pastor of the new church in the west end of Allentown.
Cardinal Dougherty came to this humble chapel to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to forty-five parishioners in September 1920.
The lovely chapel, which was carved from a stable and carriage house, faihfully served St. Ctaharine's parisihioners until 1927.

The Philippines then became an American Territory and American bishops were appointed, among them Bishop Dennis Dougherty (later Cardinal-archbishop of Philadelphia) who was assigned to the diocese of Nueva Segovia with its see in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
In 1906, Bishop Dougherty sent a pressing appeal for missionaries to the headquarters of the CICM Congregation in Scheut-Brussels.
The challenge was immediately accepted and in September 1907, Bishop Dougherty welcomed the first eight CICM priests and one CICM brother who began in earnest the evangelization of the people of the Mountain Province, the Igorots as they are called, who were then still largely animists with a tradition of violence.

With the expanding growth of the Catholic population in the northeast section of Philadelphia, as well as the lack of facilities in the existing Catholic high schools for girls, the need for a new school became imperative.
This school was a favorite of Cardinal Dougherty, and he funded the construction of the school with the gifts which had been given him on his jubilee, not using Diocesan assessment as he did for the other schools.
To express his personal devotion to Saint Therese of Lisieux, His Eminence named the school "Little Flower" confident that as patroness of the school she, in her "Little Way," would be a model for the girls who would be educated there.

The School of Technology was established in 1905 under the presidency of Father Laurence Delurey and, in 1915, a two-year pre-medical program was established under the presidency of Father Edward C. Dohan, in recognition of the new requirements for candidates wishing to matriculate in approved medical schools.
This, in turn, led to the establishment of a four-year pre-medical program, the B.S. in biology, and the founding of the sciences division in 1926 under Father Joseph M. Dougherty, who became the first dean.
At the centennial observances, celebrated by His Eminence Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia, the bell rang to open the ceremony.

At a meeting of the Archdiocesan Consulter's on May 6, 1947 the formation of a new parish in the Drexel Hill section of Upper Darby Township was unanimously approved.
