 Hepatitis C by Dental Transmission
DENTAL patients across Scotland are being put at risk of infection from blood diseases such as HIV and hepatitis because of poor standards of hygiene.
For exposure of dental staff to HCV to occur, HCV must be present in the population of dental patients and the dentist must experience an exposure-prone injury.
A survey of 310 dental practitioners in Scotland found that 56 per cent of respondents reported at least one such injury within the preceding year, half of which were judged to have constituted a moderate or high risk of transmission to the dental practitioner (Felix et al 1994).

What is Root Canal - Dentalfind.com
The success rate of root canal surgery is high.  Only 5% of the cases typically require remedial treatment.  Complications usually involve re-infection of the pulp from diseased tissue that was inadvertently left behind.  A re-infection of the tooth could mean either another root canal surgery or the loss of the tooth.
The surgery can take a long time, and the pain can be intense even with local anesthetic.  Most skilled endodontists can perform the treatment without creating additional pain.
After the surgery, most patients notice inflammation of the gums.  The tooth will remain sensitive to contact so chewing hard foods on it is not recommended.  However, a successful root canal surgery can restore a patient’s ability to chew without continuous pain or the possibility of losing that tooth.

IPT should be investigated at dental schools, and should be considered as a part of good dental training.

When to see a dental specialist
Before we get into the specifics about what procedures should be referred to a dental specialist, we need to define what the dental specialties are, and what makes them different from general dentistry.
In fact, the recent trend is for the general dentist to do more of these advanced procedures, providing most of their patient’s dental needs “under one roof”.
Even so, in some cases, the dental specialist is the best person to treat a difficult dental problem.
