The "Old Main" library in Civic Center Park served downtown Denver for 45 years, until the City commissioned the firm of Fisher and Fisher/Burnham Hoyt to design a new Central Library at the corner of Broadway and 14th Avenue.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's network of libraries faces a 80 percent cut as it stands to lose $2 million of its $2.5 million in funding under President Bush's proposed 2007 budget, which threatens to close the headquarters library and many regional facilities, as well as shut down the libraries' electronic catalog.
Library officials say they've already cut operations to the bone, slashing $2 million in annual spending since 2003.
The library's current operating budget is $19 million, but it faces a reduction in state funding by $50,000 for materials in 2006.
