No one in the audience knew that Graves was in such a state of crisis that she had convened a "summit" in her Chicago hotel suite so that her mother, her aunt, a shaman and other spiritually inclined friends could attempt to drive away the mezzo-soprano's intensely dark clouds.
Graves worked odd jobs to put herself through Oberlin College and the New England Conservatory, and by the 1990s she was establishing herself as the definitive Carmen and singing alongside the likes of Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras.

Graves lacks the ability to differentiate between the emotions of the various characters and project these into the microphone but I have to strongly disagree.
Denyce Graves has chosen arias that we don't always get to hear and I thank her for doing so, she breathes live into the old standards from "Carmen" and introduces us to arias that will undoubtably become new favorites.
Denyce Graves has a lot of potential, but she should perform airas and in Operas as to her vocal comfort.
