Rediff On The NeT: Saisuresh Sivaswamy on the importance of being Murli Deora
Murli Deora's leadership is one that appeals to the first mentioned level of the urbanscape; unfortunately for him, this is also a section that hugs the green card to its chest and does not come out to vote, leaving such menial tasks to the plebes.
Deora may shrug off responsibility by pointing a finger at New Delhi, but that would be like blaming Beijing for the Communist debacle in the Punjab elections.
That Deora cannot be long separated from power is well known in Bombay, a city that has unhesitatingly and unabashedly embraced saffron, giving the rebuff to the Marwari politico who has outlasted more chief ministers than the number of fingers he has on his hands.

Murli Deora has made tenancy laws the fulcrum of his South Bombay constituency campaign, and alleges that the BJP-SS government "deliberately sabotaged" the tenant ownership scheme, under which tenants would be allowed to acquire ownership rights in the properties they occupy.
Deora published statements in various newspaper ads that tenants would be evicted from 1 April, 1998, and that legal heirs of tenants would have no tenancy rights and would be liable for eviction.
For instance, Balasaheb, at his totally successful Thakurdwar rally, continuously referred to Deora as "Murli Bevda." Now, this is the kind of tickling stuff that's instantly lapped up by the media.
