In the book Carrier, Tom Clancy records the various departments of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington as they were in autumn 1997.
The OiC is known as the "Air Boss" and is a Commander; the 2iC is called the "Mini Boss" and is usually a Lieutenant Commander.

The naval science department and naval ROTC unit at Los Angeles were established in September, 1938, by the Secretary of the Navy to provide for a permanent academic system of training and instruction in essential naval subjects leading toward graduate commissions in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
The department was organized under the Division of Physical Sciences of the College of Letters and Science, and maintained a faculty staff of seven Navy and Marine Corps officers in the mid-1960s.
Not only did the department serve as a major academic framework for the Near Eastern Center and the African Studies Center, but it also contributed to the activities of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the Center for Research in Languages and Linguistics, as well as the Linguistics Program.

Naval Science Students—Naval science students are associated with the Department of Naval Science for academic instruction only, e.g., for courses in navigation or organization and management.
After graduating and completing their naval science requirements, students are commissioned as ensigns in the Naval Reserve or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps Reserve and serve on active duty for a minimum of three years.
The naval science curriculum covers basic seamanship to fleet operations and provides intensive education in the art and science of being a naval officer.

Naval architecture itself was taking a scientific turn in England with the advent of Froude's ship model basin.
In 1957, upon Baier's retirement, Richard B. Couch was induced to leave his position as Chief Naval Architect with the Navy Department's Bureau of Ships to become Chairman of the UM Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
In October 1981, to commemorate the centennial of naval architecture and marine engineering at the University of Michigan, the department issued a report titled "Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan 1881-1981." That report provided many of the facts recorded here.

The Navy Department and the War Departments in 1939 occupied all of the spaces in what was commonly called the "Munitions Building" which was composed of two structures of 18 wings, three stories high, along Constitution Avenue for the main headquarters of the Navy Department and U.S. Army Department.
Guards were stationed at the Navy Department Building entrance doors on Constitution Avenue, but none at the first floor exit doors between the 188 building wings, or the entrance- exit gates of the parking lot area in the rear of the two buildings.
USN departed from Washington, D.C. for San Francisco, where, in June 1942, was a passenger aboard the Dutch merchant ship Fontaine with a load of military personnel and equipment consigned to the Pacific Ocean area.
