The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a civilian agency of the U.S. Department of Defense.
DoDEA 4th and 8th grade students also take the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), "the Nation's Report Card." DoDDS and DDESS student scores consistently rank at or near the top of the scale when compared with the scores of other participating states and jurisdictions.
The DoDEA instructional program provides a comprehensive prekindergarten through 12th grade curriculum that is competitive with that of any school system in the United States.

It is the policy of the Department of Defense Education Agency (DoDEA) that all children with a disability receiving or entitled to receive educational instruction in the Department of Defense (DoD) schools shall be provided a free appropriate public education under the provision of DoD Instruction 1342.12.
Only records of students currently enrolled in special education are reviewed.
At the conclusion of the visit, team members meet with the administrator, area and district special education coordinators, staff members and other concerned parties to report on the findings of the review.

The defense dependents’ education system is operated through the field activity of the Department of Defense known as the Department of Defense Education Activity.
(3) Subject to the approval of the Secretary of Defense, the Department of Defense Education Activity is authorized an appropriate number of civilian employees in its central office and such regional or area office as are established pursuant to paragraph (1).

Consistent with DoD Directive 5100.87 (reference (c)), the Office of the Chancellor for Education and Professional Development is established as a component of the Department of Defense Human Resources Activity (DoDHRA), a DoD Field Activity, under the authority, direction, and control of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (USD(PandR)).
