In response to concerns expressed about the monetary and environmental expenses of refurbishing the Point Lepreau nuclear reactor, a New Brunswick Department of Energy representative says the province is looking at all possible options, pros and cons before a decision is made on what to do with the aging facility.
The Atlantic Canada Energy Coalition is asking Prime Minister Paul Martin to reject the province's request for financial assistance to refurbish Point Lepreau, a project with an estimated cost of $1.4 billion.
The coalition maintains that rather than investing money in the refurbishment of Point Lepreau, money should, instead, be put into energy efficiency measures, industrial cogeneration, and renewable energy projects such as wind, solar, and geothermal energy, as well as fuel switching to give New Brunswickers an alternative to electric heating.
