The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) is a former department in the Government of Canada which had responsibility for foreign policy and diplomacy, as well as import/export and international trade policies.
Prior to 1993, the department was referred to as the Department of External Affairs.
At the time when the External Affairs portfolio's inception in 1905, Canada was a self-governing dominion in the British Empire and did not have an independent foreign policy.

The Department has two Ministers (the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister for International Trade) and three Secretaries of State (for Asia Pacific; for Latin America, Africa and la Francophonie; and for Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East).

The Department of External Affairs in 1935 was separated from the Prime Minister's Department and given its own permanent head (Colonel W. Hodgson, whose background was in military intelligence) and its own budgetary allocation.
The Department began at once to recruit university graduates but, when it was decided in 1939 that Australia should proceed to open diplomatic posts overseas, the Department could not yet provide officers to head those posts.
When the Department, like Canberra itself, was young and small, officers were known to take their dogs to work with them and one officer even rode a horse to work.

Indeed, at the request of Portugal, Indonesia extended its active cooperation to theprocess as inter alia evidenced by the series of meetings held between high-levelrepresentatives of the two sides in New York, September 1974; Lisbon, October 1974; London, March 1975; Jakarta, August and September 1975; and Rome.
Thepurpose of these discussions, of which two meetings, one in New York and one in Rome, havebeen held, is to strengthen the efforts to reach a solution that is peaceful,comprehensive and internationally acceptable.
