The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a Cabinet department of the United States government responsible for administering programs of veterans benefits for veterans, their families, and survivors.
Veterans with a 50% service-connected disability (ie: losing a limb in battle, PTSD, etc) are provided comprehensive care and medicines at no charge.
If a veteran is dealing with a problem that started or was aggravated due to military service, it is still advisable for that person to go to a VA Regional Office and apply for a service connected disability.

It is the duty and purpose of the Department to fully develop and maintain a comprehensive statewide veterans' assistance program; to assist the veteran and his dependents in all their problems and to inform them of all their rights and entitlements under "veterans" laws.
Any veteran resident requiring special mechanical control devices to operate a vehicle because of service-connected disabilities; or a veteran whose service-connection exceed 50%, may be entitled to a special license plate for all vehicles owned by the veteran (solely or jointly).
The veteran must have been a permanent civilian resident of the State of Alabama for at least one year immediately prior to (a) the initial entry into active military service or (b) any subsequent period of military service in which a break in service occurred and the Alabama civilian residency was established.

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs' Military Funeral Honors Program is designed to complement and augment existing federal and local programs that provide this solemn and dignified ceremony to honor a deceased veteran at the time of burial.
Veterans groups who complete the certification program will not only gain updated procedures and information on conducting honors, but will also be certified if their organization desires to apply for the reimbursement of honors when federal funds become available.
Veterans groups that perform honors are eligible under the state program to recieve a stipend of up to $50 for expenses incurred while performing honors.

The commissioner shall have sole power to remove any veteran whose care and treatment is paid for by the state from any hospital to another and shall appoint such agents as are necessary to see that veterans admitted to hospitals are receiving necessary food, clothing, care and treatment.
The commitment of a veteran to the Veterans' Administration or other agency of the United States government by a court of another state or of the District of Columbia, under a similar provision of law, shall have the same force and effect as if such commitment were made by a court of this state.

By law, honorably discharged veterans who served during wartime as defined in CGS § 27-122b are eligible for burial in the state veterans' cemetery.
It appears that, in practice, the Veterans Affairs Department uses the wars listed in CGS § 27-103 to determine eligibility for burial in the cemetery.
