Journey's sixth album, Departure, was released in March of 1980 on the Columbia Records label.
Journey's first two albums with vocalist Steve Perry, "Infinity" and "Evolution", saw the band vault from little-known progressive rockers to platinum-selling melodic rockers.
"Departure" would be the band's highest charting album to date and vaulted them, for the first time, into the top 10 on the Billboard album charts.

Still, for all the album’s adventurous strengths, Journey are at their best as a highly commercial, supremely melodic pop rock band, and on the whole these songs simply aren’t as memorable as those on the preceding two albums.
Anyway, this album is a bit mellower than most Journey albums, and Cain's dated, tinkly keyboards are still a hindrance (by and large Journey's keyboards sound like their colorful album covers look).
Although Journey were album oriented artists (the cream of the crop being 1981’s Escape), their albums were generally highlighted by their singles, and as such this 2-cd retrospective should contain all the music that most non-hardcore Journey fans will need.

The sad fact is that most people think Journey ended their run sometime in the early 80s and are not even aware of the "Trial By Fire" album much less anything that came afterwards.
Plus the album starts off with a double bang on the kinda corny "Faith in the Heartland", which sounds like a big, bold AOR number, but the lyrics are cheese and then the much better "The Place In Your Heart" which is classic Journey all the way.
This latest Journey album is the modern day equivalent of "Esc4P3" for me. And by that I mean there is a ton of rockers on here.

We mixed the album in Vancouver with Mike Fraser, he continues, who worked with Neal, Deen and I when we did the Bad English album, and he s done a lot of Aerosmith records.
The album title, Generations, represents the constancy of Journey's followers old and new throughout the past 30 years.
Perry was more of just one of the greatest lead vocalists in rock history, he was the key element to Journey becoming one of the biggest bands in the 80s.

Steve Perry: I think one of the reasons why it was such a successful album is because there was a certain type of acoustic texture.
I'm talking specifically of the introduction of Jonathan Cain when we had keyboard and voice singing and the acoustics of grand and a voice on one, than all of a sudden Neal's electric would come in.
Well, despite the fact that Journey hadn't put out a new album since 1986, their songs continue to be played on the radio (transcriber's note: "and the masses rejoiced!!!!").

Departure (1980) Definitely the rawest sounding Journey album, this album features a good deal of rockers for the band.
Features only three songs with vocals, "Destiny", a prog rock throwback to the first album, "Sandcastles", and "Little Girl", a ballad which wouldn't be out of place on one of their "regular" albums.
Captured (1981) Journey were a very popular, platinum selling band at this point, but they hadn't quite reached the level of superstardom yet.
