Miraj - The night of Ascension to Heaven
From at least the 14th century, the Buraq myth, visualized on the basis of ancient depictions of griffins, sphinxes, and centaurs, became a favourite subject of Persian miniature painting.
Muhammad-mysticism proper was developed in the late 9th century; he is shown as the one who precedes creation, his light is pre-eternal, and he is the reason for and goal of creation.
Musa, however, advises Muhammad to plead for a reduction of the number as being too difficult for believers, and the obligation is eventually reduced to five prayers each day.

St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture: Sylvester Stallone
The most pervasive action star of the 1970s and the 1980s, Sylvester Stallone became renowned for his depictions of inarticulate, larger-than-life heroes, most notably the lovable pugilist Rocky Balboa, and the alienated Vietnam War veteran John Rambo.
Stallone was 30 years old, with a pregnant wife and $106 in the bank, when he chanced to see a closed-circuit prize fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner&; a longshot who thrilled the crowd by going the distance.
Stallone has said that as a teenager he was inspired to body build after watching the gladiator movies of Steve Reeves; doubtless, teenagers of the 1970s and 1980s were similarly inspired by Stallone.

 Martyrdom in Jihad
While it is not provable that Muhammad intentionally created the dialectic between jihad and the martyr's reward in paradise for the sake of encouraging his followers to battle on his behalf, there is no doubt that the dialectic was employed to that end in the early community.

As theorist Herbert Gans argued in the Columbia Journalism Review, "the rules of news judgment call for ignoring story implications."

 Cartoons represent animosity
The Hamshahri newspaper has announced a contest it is holding for cartoons depicting the Holocaust in response to the images of Muhammad.
As a community, I hope we denounce the response of the Hamshahri newspaper the same way we should denounce the depictions commissioned by the Jyllands-Posten, and fight insensitivity, ignorance, and hatred here at Bowdoin and in our lives beyond the campus.
The actions of the Hamshahri are most certainly not the first of their kind, and I doubt, unfortunately, that they will be the last.
