The Deputy Chancellor was however not a subordinate of the Chancellor and his independence was specifically confirmed by the laws passed during the reign of the king Alexander the Jagiellonian.

The post of Chancellor has been an important one since the College was chartered in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II of Great Britain.
Until 1776, the Chancellor was an English subject – usually the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Bishop of London – who served as the College’s advocate to the crown, while a colonial president oversaw the day-to-day activities of the Williamsburg campus.
She served as Deputy County Attorney of San Mateo County, California, from 1952 to 1953, and as a civilian attorney for the Quartermaster Market Center, Frankfurt, Germany, from 1954 to 1957.

It is not the property of The Crown, but is instead the personal (inherited) property of the monarch and has been since 1399, when the Dukedom of Lancaster, held by Henry of Bolingbroke, merged with the crown on his appropriation of the throne (after the dispossesion from Richard II).
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, a high position which is sometimes a cabinet post.
Since, for at least the last two centuries, the estate being run by a deputy, the Chancellor rarely has had any significant duties pertaining to management of the Duchy itself, he is usually available as a minister without portfolio.

Berkeley — Chang-Lin Tien, who, as chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1990-97 was an outspoken supporter of equal opportunity in higher education and who preserved the campus's preeminence despite a prolonged state budget crisis, died Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Kaiser Permanente hospital in Redwood City.
As chancellor, Tien was beloved as a champion of students.

Speaking on the occasion, RCCI Chairman Abdulrahman Al-Jeraisey referred to Crown Prince Abdullah’s visit to Germany in 2001 as greatly enhancing bilateral relations, which were reinforced by Chancellor Schröder’s 2003 visit to the Kingdom.
Chancellor Schröder also attended the signing of three economic agreements between a number of Saudi and German companies with investments exceeding SR6.0 billion [$1.6 billion] in the sectors of industry, telecommunications, technology, health, petrochemicals and transport.
