Der Ring des Nibelungen - a guide
The Ring may be interpreted to start with the creation of the world and to end with the downfall of the world (or at least of the gods).
Alberich's Ring is both a symbol of and an instrument for the unreserved exercise of power, a power that is made possible by the renunciation of love.
In the Ring, it is not uncommon that a motif emerges so to speak in the background, and readily in a connection where we (at the first time of listening) cannot know anything about the meaning of the motif, not even that this is the anticipation of a new motif.

This is a hypertext version of Wagner's tetralogy: Der Ring des Nibelungen which is made up of a prologue (Das Rhinegold) and three operas (Die Walkure, Siegfried, and Gotterdamerung).
Alberich refuses, saying "take my life, but not the ring." Wotan replies "I want the ring, I don't care about your life." In a violent struggle Wotan rips the ring from Alberich's finger, and Alberich screams "treachery." Wotan takes the ring and muses that now he has all the power in the world.
For by treaty the Ring still serves as part of the ransom for the castle and if Wotan or his family attempted to regain it it would be in violation of the treaty his spear protects.

:: Der Ring des Nibelungen :: THE AWAKENING OF WOTAN
Wotan is one of the principal characters of the cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen”.
For example, if we start the chord from C, this chord would be: C, E, G, B and D. In the last appearance of the Ring-theme before the appearance of the Walhalla-theme, the Ring-theme consists of E flat, G, B flat, D flat and F. Its distribution is, in certain sense, “forming circles”.

Leap In The Dark: CD Review: Der Ring Des Nibelungen - Richard Wagner
Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring Of The Nibelungen), of which "The Ride" is merely one aria amongst four operas, remains one of the most ambitious musical projects ever attempted.
Fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will have no problems identifying with these works; the fates of the Gods and the world are closely intertwined with a ring of gold, and comparisons between the Riders of Rohan and the Norse warriors will be inevitable.
The Ring Cycle, as the four are referred to in English, is comprised of: Dan Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried, and Gotterdammerung.

Der Ring des Nibelungen - Timeline Index
Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is, in my opinion, one of, if not the, greatest musical works in history.
Needless to say, every recording of this gigantic work is going to be flawed in some way, so choosing a Ring recording is a question of personal tastes and preferences.
Der Ring des Nibelungen ("The Ring of the Nibelung", "The Nibelung's Ring", or simply, "The Ring") consists of four musico-dramatic works.

Wagner, Der Ring des Nibelungen (Wilhelm Furtwangler, Italian Radio 1953, EMI)
Furtwängler's 1953 Ring cycle, recorded "live" in the RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana) studios, one act at a time, for broadcast purposes, is remastered here from the original tapes, in contrast to vinyl pressings used for the original 1972 EMI LP release.
Furtwangler was the greatest interpreter of the Ring and this performance, even more than the 1950 La Scala Ring (which has also been remastered by Gebhardt), is his greatest on records.
Comment: If this Ring recording had full librettos of all the operas it would be first choice for any collector of opera or anyone who are going to buy a first 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' recording.

The Ring had been composed and had already premiered before the invention of the Wagner tuba.
While working on the orchestral composition of The Ring, Wagner found that he lacked an instrument that could produce a range of sound combining elements of the French horn and the trombone.
In a letter to his friend and patron King Ludwig II, Wagner mentions that, during time spent in Paris in 1853 working on the orchestral composition for Das Rheingold, he had come across a range of brass instruments called saxhorns, which were built by the inventor of the saxophone, Adolph Sax.

The Ring itself does much of its damage in this first opera and I thought it would interesting to show the events as it would see them, being the cause of all of the pain and yet inexplicably unconnected to it.
I don't know if Wagner was attempting to make the evils of the Ring unavoidable because of the evils inherent in humanity, or if it is the curse that creates all of the trouble (in which case it is the evil inherent in just ONE member of humanity, if Alberich can be considered human).
