Earliest is is Prelude and Serenade from Der Schneeman (The Snowman), written in 1908 when Korngold was only 11 years old, performed at the Proms in 1912 with Sir Henry Wood on the podium; he was, and remains, the youngest composer ever to be played at the Proms.
It is amazing that this vital, soaring music was not well received at its Vienna premiere in 1920; about two decades later the composer used much of this music in his score for the film The Adventures of Robin Hood, for which he won his second Academy Award.
Also included is an interlude from the opera Das Wunder der Heliane, Op.

They rejoice in the opening movement’s flowing romantic lyricism that points towards the operas (in fact the puckish, mischievous Scherzo anticipates, in its beguiling Trio section, a lovely phrase that Korngold would use in Der Ring des Polykrates) and to the film music.

 The Case of Hans Fischerkoesen
After World War II started, the trickle of cartoons produced by German studios was not enough to cover the loss of Disney and other American product.
Among the filmmakers called into action was Hans Fischerkoesen, who was among the most distinguished animators remaining in Germany between 1933 and 1945, and whose work during the war years included a trio of remarkable films: Verwitterte Melodie (Weather-beaten Melody, 1942), Der Schneemann (The Snowman, 1943) and Das dumme Gänslein (The Silly Goose, 1944).
Hans Fischer was born May 18, 1896 in Bad Koesen, near Naumburg of the famous cathedral, on the road between Leipzig and Weimar.

With the appearance of the opera Die tote Stadt, completed when he was 23 and acclaimed internationally after its dual premiere in Hamburg and Cologne (1920), his early fame reached its height.
He also began teaching opera and composition at the Vienna Staatsakademie and was awarded the title professor honoris causa by the president of Austria.

By that time, he had already composed a healthy amount of chamber music, as well as two one-act operas, the romantic Violanta and the comic Der Ring des Polykrates, meant to be heard in tandem like Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci.
Notwithstanding the star cast of Lotte Lehmann and Jan Kiepura, Das Wunder der Heliane (The Miracle of Heliane) soon disappeared from the repertory.
Perhaps it was this disappointment, on the part of both the composer and the public, which drastically changed Korngold's future career.

That he soon became one of this century's finest can be heard in his early symphonic overture Sursum Corda.

The Interlude from Das Wunder Der Heliane demonstrates everything that's magical about Korngold at his "cinematic" greatest: sweeping melodies, moments of tender repose, lush orchestration, muscular assertions from the brass and percussion, whooping horns--in short, the works.
