Topic: Der Zauberlehrling

The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sorcerer's Apprentice is the English name of both an 1897 symphonic poem by Paul Dukas (L'apprenti sorcier in French), and of a 1797 ballad by Goethe (Der Zauberlehrling in German), which inspired the musical work.
The lines in which the apprentice implores the returning sorcerer to help him with the mess he has created has attained the status of a proverb, especially the line "Die ich rief, die Geister" ("The spirits that I called").
In Der Zauberlehrling and in Fantasia, it is generally presumed that the story embodies some maxim or moral, and that it is something along the lines of "don't start what you can't finish" or "don't meddle with things you don't understand".

WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Perhaps the single most influential piece is "Mignon's Song" which opens with what has been called the most famous line in German poetry: "Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen blühn?"
Lines from "Faust", like "Das also war des Pudels Kern", "Das ist der Weisheit letzter Schluss" or "Grau ist alle Theorie" have entered everyday German usage.
Although a doubtful success of Goethe in this field, the famous line from the drama "Götz von Berlichingen" ("Er kann mich im Arsche lecken" — "He can lick my arse") has become a vulgar idiom in many languages and shows Goethe's deep cultural impact extending across social, national and linguistic borders.

 Erich Kästner
During the postwar years, Kästner was an active participant in the Munich cabaret Die Schaubude (from 1951 Die kleine Freiheit).
In his play DIE SCHULE DER DIKTATOREN (1949) Kästner unmasked inhumanity in the form of comedy, but he did not gain such success as with his portrayals of immorality in his novels and poems.
DIE KONFERENZ DER TIERE (1949, The Animals' Conference) was written in the mode of George Orwell's famous Animal Farm (1945).

L'Apprenti Sorcier, based on Goethe's ballad Der Zauberlehrling ("The Sorcerer's Apprentice") was composed early in 1897 and received its first performance on May 18 of that year at the Soci‚t‚ Nationale de Musique in Paris with the composer conducting.
The version that Dukas used for his tone poem was written by the great German poet Goethe who titled his humorous ballad Der Zauberlehrling, literally, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." While in Lucian's version it is a pestle that the magician uses to fetch water, Goethe substituted a broom.
Other than that, the story remains similar: the wizard's apprentice uses an incantation learned from his master to command the broom to draw water from the well.

 Presidential Lectures: Carolyn Abbate
This apparently straightforward piece of program music is usually explained by drawing correspondences between the program—Goethe’s poem, Der Zauberlehrling—and themes found in the music.
Abbate shows how motivic and formal analyses fail to explain the full range of the work’s meaning or account for all aspects of its form.
Both are narrative monologues that interrupt the linear action of the operas to inform the listener of events from another time.

One of the disc’s highlights for me was Loewe’s Der König auf dem Turne, a strophic setting of pure beauty — and I’ll forgive Hawlata and Deutsch for omitting the second and fourth verses so wonderfully do they do it.
I had to check Hermann Reutter’s dates as I listened to his setting — though he died in 1995 this one could have been written almost by a contemporary of Loewe.
Mind you I’d tramp through a goodly number of shepherd strewn Schubertian fields to listen to Der König auf dem Turne.
