  derailleur
If your derailleur was recently installed or if you know that you took a direct impact to your front derailleur, then the first thing you should check is the air gap between the big chainring and the bottom of the front derailleur.
, shift the front derailleur to the small chainring and the rear derailleur to the largest cog.  Stand behind the bike and eyeball the alignment.  The derailleur cogs should be in line with the smallest cog.  If not, adjust the L screw so that it is in line.
If you turn the barrel counterclockwise then it moves away from the derailleur, elongating the barrel housing which increases the tension in the derailleur cable which in turn will cause the derailleur to move in the direction of the largest cog.

How To Adjust Your Rear Derailleur - penncycle.com
This rule will help you remember which way to turn it: If the derailleur is hesitating when shifting toward the spokes (the more common problem), turn the barrel toward the spokes (counter-clockwise); and if it hesitates shifting away from the spokes, turn the adjuster away (clockwise) from the spokes.
It's important to notice however, because once the derailleur is bent, bad things can happen such as shifting into the spokes, which may ruin the derailleur and might seriously damage the rear wheel and frame.
Signs of having a bent derailleur include sudden hesitation shifting into harder gears and a clicking sound when you're on your largest cog (shift out of this gear immediately if you hear this sound because the derailleur is hitting the spokes and may get pulled into the wheel at any moment).

The derailleur body is fitted with a spring that is pulled tight, or relaxed, by the inner wire.
Derailleur pulleys are limited in both inward and outward motions by using the derailleur limit screws.
Shimano "rapid rise" derailleurs use a return spring that puts the derailleur under the innermost rear sprocket when the inner wire tension is released.

 Low-friction derailleur cable router (US5624334)
The rear derailleur is actuated by variation in tension applied to the derailleur cable from a direction rearward of the derailleur.
The tension in the derailleur cable is controlled by a shifter attached to a distal end of the derailleur cable, the shifter being mounted to the bicycle frame forward of the derailleur.
The derailleur cable includes a cable housing around at least a portion of the derailleur cable with the derailleur housing being fixed against lengthwise movement relative to the bicycle frame by attachment to the bicycle frame.

A spring in the derailleur returns the cage to the other direction when the inner wire is relaxed.
If the derailleur is too low, it may scrape against the chainrings or jam the chain when shifting.
Generally, the outer cage of the front derailleur should be aligned to the chain.

 Welcome to EFun!-derailleur maintenance
The modern derailleur systems are such that they are easily adjusted should the need arise, and it is important to check and adjust them periodically to get smooth shifting between gears.
To adjust the derailleur, stand behind the bike and turn the barrel adjuster (the round knurled piece) either counter-clockwise or clockwise in half-turn increments until the shifting hesitation is eliminated.
If the derailleur is hesitating when shifting toward the spokes, turn the barrel adjuster toward the spokes (counter-clockwise); if it hesitates shifting away from the spokes, turn it away from the spokes (clockwise).

For derailleurs with the spring in the upper pulley, increase the spring tension by tightening the "B" screw, found in adjacent to the top bolt.
The derailleur cage may be held to the body with a pivot bolt.
New derailleurs are typically assembled with the spring in the hole that allows the most relaxed position of the spring.

 Epinions.com - Derailer or Derailleur?
A typical derailleur consists of a parallelogram (a four sided geometric form, in which opposite sides are of equal length) which moves a cage.
The jockey or upper pulley on a rear derailleur is the pulley which guides the chain from one sprocket to another.
The tension or lower pulley on a rear derailleur adjusts the tension (hence the name) on the chain as different-sized sprockets are selected.

 The Front Derailleur
The front derailleur is the metal "cage" attached or clamped to your seat post that moves your chain from one chain ring to another.
If your front derailleur is properly adjusted, the chain will shift quickly and easily from one ring to the next and without overshooting or jumping off the chain set.
Be sure to clean the derailleur mechanism thoroughly but carefully, including the hard to reach areas of the main body and arm.

Bicycle Repair - Rear Derailleur Adjustment
It is located right where the derailleur attaches to the hanger and actually pushes the derailleur back in order for the derailleur to keep from contacting the cassette.
The rear derailleur easily engages low gears (large sprockets) but hesitates to engage the smallest sprocket, or doesn't engage it at all.
Supposedly, it can bring the derailleur guide pulley closer to a close-range freewheel, and farther away to accomodate a wide-range freewheel, but in most cases, it makes little difference and is seldom used.

 Replacing the Front Derailleur
Replacing the front derailleur is one of those jobs that seems impossibly complicated.
Set the limit screws so the inner wall of the derailleur cage is 2 mm (just less than 1/8 inch) away from the chain while in the small chainring and the biggest biggest cassette cog, and the outer wall is 2 mm from the chain while in big ring - smallest cog.
The derailleur cage (the long thin "box" that moves with the chain) should be exactly parallel to the chainwheel.

 Derailer, Not Derailleur!
Traditionally, in U.S. usage, the gear-change mechanism we all know and love has been called a "derailleur." This is actually a French word, but it is commonly pronounced in an anglicized manner, as "de-RAIL-er" or "de-RAIL-yur." The actual French pronunciation is more like "day-RYE-EUH" but nobody says that when speaking English.
The proper French spelling is "dérailleur," not "derailleur."
The French Ministry of Culture has been on a campaign to purge the French language of the "impurity" caused by the introduction of foreign, (especially English) words into French speech and writing.

If derailleur will not shift one sprocket after removing slack in "d", return lever back to outermost sprocket position and increase inner wire tension by turning barrel adjuster counter-clockwise 1/4 turn and attempt shift again.
Shimano "rapid rise" or "Low-Normal" derailleurs use a return spring that puts the derailleur under the innermost rear sprocket when the inner wire tension is released.

Rear Derailleur Check Out   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-07-09)
The first thing to check when experiencing shifting problems is the rear derailleur, and the first item to eyeball is the alignment of the outer cog with the lower idler pulley on the derailleur.
But before you begin bending the cage of the derailleur to try to align it, check to see if the derailleur hanger (the tab on the frame that the derailleur bolts to) isn't bent, a victim of an off-trail adventure.
The tool is secured to the derailleur hanger and rotated; if the hanger tab is bent, there will be a larger gap between the tire and tool in one position and a smaller gap 180 degrees opposite.

Looking from the side and using your fingers to pull the cage outward, position the bottom edge of the derailleur cage 1 to 3 millimeters (road is lower and mountain higher) above the tips of the chainring teeth.
While hand-pedaling the cranks, turn the low-limit screw (usually the one farther from the frame, but the limit screw position varies on a lot of bikes--some have an H or an L next to the screws) clockwise until the chain won't drop into the small ring when you try to shift down.

 Derailleur Adjustment
Technically the first thing to do, before adjusting the derailleur, is to correctly install a chain, including sizing it properly.
For example, the cable tension, and high/low adjustment screws on the front derailleur, are set so that the inside trim adjustment is actually the "click" that derails the chain up to the large chainring.
If the chain does not move crisply from the first to the second cog, turn the SIS barrel adjuster one-quarter turn CW.If the drivetrain cannot be tuned to noiseless and trouble-free SIS operation by this method, you may have worn cogs, worn chain, or a worn, damaged, or obstructed shift cable.

How to Maintain a Rear Derailleur   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-07-09)
Lightly pushing the derailleur toward the spokes by hand, be sure the derailleur pulleys line up directly underneath the largest cog.
With the drivetrain in the big chainring/smallest cog combo, turn the barrel adjuster (located where the cable enters the rear derailleur) in completely, then back it out one full turn and reattach the cable to the derailleur, pulling it taut to remove all slack.
Grit on the outside of the derailleur can work its way into the moving parts, causing premature wear--which creates slop in the derailleur's movement and leads to lousy shifting.
