Werburgh's Church, Derby in 1735; the painter Joseph Wright, known as Wright of Derby, who was famous for his revolutionary use of light in his paintings and was an associate of the Royal Academy; and John Whitehurst, a famous clockmaker and philosopher.
Derby was awarded city status in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth II to mark the 25th anniversary of her ascension to the throne.
Derby Arboretum was the first public park in the country, and is rumoured to have been the inspiration for central park in New York, though it has been somewhat neglected in recent years.

Derby (pronounced 'Darby') is a city in the East Midlands of England.

In 1717 Derby was the site of the first Derby Industrial Museum water powered silk mill in Britain, built by John Lombe and George Sorocold after Lombe had reputedly stolen the secrets of silk-throwing from Piedmont in what is now Italy (he is alleged to have been poisoned by Piedmontese in revenge in 1722).

On 1 April 1997 Derby City Council became an unitary authority, with the rest of Derbyshire administered from Matlock.

 Joseph Wright of Derby Biography
Joseph Wright was born in Derby, a small city in central England, at the heart of the Industrial Revolution.
Returning to live in Derby, his reputation and career as a portrait painter began to flourish and he obtained commisions not only from Derby but increasingly from throughout nearby towns and cities.
The name "Wright of Derby" was applied to him by reviewers of the Society of Artists' exhibitions in the 1760s, to distinguish him from the Liverpool artist, Richard Wright, who was already exhibiting.

It was not until 1788 that Derby was actually chartered, the document back-dated to when the grant was made by the Legislature to Timothy Andrews (sometimes Andrus in early records) and 59 others.
Just south of Derby, Gatesborough had been granted to Josiah Gates and associates, but the fees were never paid, so the town was sold and chartered as Salem.
Part of it was annexed to Newport in 1816 (now part of Newport city); the remainder went to Derby in 1880, resulting in Derby's unusual size and shape.
