 Dereham
According to new research Dereham is the dead centre of Norfolk - well at least the town's Tesco car park is. It is 15 miles west of Norwich off the A47, and has good links with other towns in the county.
As well as the usual array of national retailers, the town is also home to a range of independent shopkeepers, including GD Cook and Sons, which stocks a range of leather goods; and Finishing Touches sells everything from picture frames to fairies.
Dereham is also home to a branch of Palmers department store.

 History of the Line
The Lynn and Dereham Railway and the Norfolk Railway both obtained Parliament's permission to build lines to Dereham in 1845, at the height of the so-called "Railway Mania", when railways were being frantically built across the whole country.
Dereham became an intermediate station between Norwich and King's Lynn, as the line from Wroxham to County School had lost its passenger service as early as 1952.
In June 1965, the Wymondham to Dereham section was reduced to single track with a passing loop at Hardingham.

Dereham was laid waste by Danish raiders and later partly destroyed by two great fires which swept through its centre in the 16th and 17th centuries.
More recent and renowned Dereham residents have included George Borrow, author of the classics "Lavengro" and "The Romany Rye," who was born at Dumpling Green on the southern edge of the town, and the poet William Cowper, who spent his latter years at a house in the market place.
Completing a Dereham literary treble is John Fenn, who discovered and transcribed the Paston letters, more than 1,000 items of correspondence which reveal much about middle class family life at the time of the War of the Roses.

In the lower part of the churchyard of St Nicholas's Church at East Dereham in central Norfolk [pictured below: author's photograph] is the holy well of the East Anglian princess, St Wihtburh, one of the six saintly children of King Rædwald's nephew, Onna.
Another possibility is that the function of the doe as a source of strength and nourishment derives from the ultimately totemic awe with which the the Wuffing family held the deer, as may be suggested by the great stag emblem from the ceremonial whetstone found among the treasures of Mound One at Sutton Hoo.
The body of St Wihtburh appears to have survived the Danish conquest of the ninth century for it was still at Dereham in 974 when it was stolen by the recently appointed Abbot Brihtnoth of the newly re-established Abbey at Ely.

The first half saw Dereham constantly on the back foot-sometimes through sloppy passing & sometimes through Pelicans good play but still holding off the opposition & riding their luck somewhat to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
Player of the match LULU HUMBERSTON, playing a centre-back was magnificent at the heart of the defence, especially defending the short corners where she was first to the ball on numerous occaisons.
Dereham probably edged it on possession & won more short corners but the finishing was just not there.
