Daly won one of the two British titles and moved on to Formula 2 in 1978 with MacMahon and Creighton Brown forming Ardmore Racing to run an ICI-sponsored Chevron.
Daly won twice that year at Mugello and Vallelunga while also trying to break into F1 with Hesketh and Ensign.
He soon got his big chance when Carlos Reutemann retired and Daly took over the second Williams, alongside Keke Rosberg but at the end of the year he was dropped to make way for Jacques Laffite.

Derek Daly has no illusions of ever stepping back into a Formula One racecar -- even for a test session.
Daly, a former F1 driver who owns and operates the Derek Daly Performance Driving Academy at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, tested the Jordan-Ford EC13 this week at Silverstone, England, for a television show and said afterward he would hang up his driving suit.
Since 1985, Daly has served as a television analyst on ESPN, CBS Sports and Speed Channel race broadcasts and said getting back into the car on occasion has helped him keep up with the ever-changing sport of auto racing.

He lost momentum in 1981 with a switch to the uncompetitive RAM team, but was drafted back into front line F1 the following year with Williams after Carlos Reutemann's retirement.

John Corbin mentioned to me on the Moo cruise that he had taken a course at Derek Daly in Las Vegas and DD has a 2 day course using *only* Z3's.
Some of the things they do to the 1.9's are for training purposes like cutting off the exhaust and replacing the muffler so its really loud and they can hear when you are accelerating, brakes squeal etc. so they know what you are doing all the time.
I have already begun discussions with the Derek Daly school about a special Z3 only course geared to Z3 enthusiasts, with only Z3’ers at the school over the Presidents Day weekend in February ’00.

I just got back from the Derek Daly Formula Car School this past Monday.=20 I have a tough time trying to tell people what an awesome experience it=20 was, but I'll try and recap the 3 days...
That=20 combined with your performance on the track and the passing/starting=20 exercises qualified you for an SCCA regional competition license (3 of=20 us passed, one of the PCA boys failed).=20 That in a nutshell tries to describe the experience during the day (Las=20 Vegas at night is another story!).
It should be noted=20 that all excercises are done at full speed with the exception of the=20 intial lead/follow on the second day.
