Derek is also one of Ireland's most popular television personalities - he presents the weekly national lottery programme Winning Streak on Saturday nights on RTÉ One.
Her radio interview with Derek on the fleas, ticks and parasites of the human body is a classic of its kind.
He is a regular contributor to 'Mooney Goes Wild' and has also made numerous TV appearances, including a documentary on his birdwatching life as part of RTÉ's 'Obsessions' series.

The following month Mooney won a second award - the ESB Millennium Environment Award - for the best item during the year on the environment in print, radio or television.
Following the retirement of Mike Murphy in 2002 he became the presenter of the hugely popular Winning Streak, a Saturday night game show but was temporarily replaced by Laura Woods while he presented You're A Star.
In addition to all of this Mooney has also presented and produced RTÉ's Liveline, and some religious and daily magazine programmes.

Derek is right not to comment on it because to do so would mean that it was ok to ask in the first place and it just isn't.
I am not for a moment saying Derek Mooney's life should be used as a gay political tool, but come on.
I'm sure if Derek Mooney was asked if he was gay he would either say Yes, or that he would rather not discuss it, both answers I feel would be perfectly acceptable in the circumstances.

If Derek Mooney was the kind of person who courted publicity at every corner - like nearly all the examples you mention do - then it would be a bit much for him to turn around and shout 'no fair'.
Derek strikes me as being a happy, laid-back person and yet he must feel the need not to rock the boat out there.
Derek Mooney was not subject to those basic journalistic procedures.

Playback with Ruth Buchanan had a 29.8 per cent rise to 279,000 and Derek Mooney with his Mooney Goes Wild on One immediately afterwards was up by 31.1 per cent to 257,000.

The Irish Defence Forces today named the man as 33-year-old Sergeant Derek Mooney, who was unmarried and from Blackrock, County Dublin.
Sergeant Mooney had been in the Irish army for 16 years and had previously served overseas with the UN in Lebanon, East Timor and Honduras.
