  nimmo
Derek Nimmo, who has died in hospital aged 68, two months after a fall at his home, was an example of a now extinct English species: the good-looking funny-man actor who can - protected by his looks and height -- bumble, stutter and wriggle without losing the respect of the audience.
On TV Derek Nimmo was in high rating ecclesiastical comedy series like All Gas and Gaiters, Hells Bells and Oh Brother, O Father, where his personality was crucial in ensuring that stuttering and gangly vicars or monks did not offend the most touchy members of a mass audience.
Derek Nimmo was born in Liverpool, the son of an insurance man. He had the good fortune to attend the city's Quarry Bank School, later a comprehensive but at that time a grammar school run by a headmaster, RF Bailey, who believed in opening up his pupils' awareness of life rather than merely the classroom.

A to Z of TV One of the first TV series to poke fun at the clergy (albeit in a very gentle manner), All Gas and Gaiters is the fondly remembered sitcom that elevated Derek Nimmo to 'household name' status in Britain and also spawned two spin-off series as well as a radio show.
Nimmo was cast as the Reverend Mervyn Noote, a naïve and somewhat bumbling chaplain at a 13th century cathedral called St. Oggs.
Derek Nimmo was an instant hit with viewers and became so closely associated with the role that when he appeared in the 1967 Wolfe and Chesney series, Sorry I'm Single, playing a bachelor who shares his Hampstead bed-sit with three females, he received letters of complaint from horrified clergymen.

This time let loose in a monastery, Nimmo starred as Brother Dominic a novice monk at Mountacres Priory, where he trod the thin line between acceptance and expulsion from his holy order.
Like Rev Noote in the series before, Nimmo played a character whose clumsiness and ability to say a dozen words where one may have been necessary was frowned upon by some of his peers, most notably Father Matthew (Derek Francis), but supported by the more well meaning such as Father Anselm (Felix Aylmer).
Nimmo was by this time considered fairly hot property on British TV and made Oh, Brother!
