Eddie the Head - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the band was looking through potential artwork for their first album, they came across the artwork by Derek Riggs that would eventually become the artwork for the self-titled album.
The artwork for the second album, Killers, was also an original Riggs painting before he started creating bespoke album covers from The Number of the Beast onwards.
Derek Riggs claimed, in the Maiden documentary 12 Wasted Years, that the design for Eddie the cartoon was based on a graphic he saw on the news, painted on the side of a Vietnamese tank.

But all Eddie still was, was a head on the stage, until the group met Derek Riggs (through Rod Smallwood, their manager), he designed the long awaited body for Eddie.
It seems as if Maiden was getting dissapointed with the Eddies the way Derek started to draw them, for the sleeve of Fear Of The Dark was drawn by a different artist (Melvyn Grant) and the ones which were drawn by Derek were rather ugly.
So this is the current state of the art, it still remains to be seen what will happen in the future, Derek seems to be on his way back, but he's not there yet.

After creating the character Eddie T. Head, supplying the cover art for Iron Maiden's first eight albums and providing countless other illustrations, Riggs seemed as indispensable to the band as the musicians themselves.
But in 1992, the work of another artist graced the cover of the album "Fear of the Dark." And on "The X Factor," Riggs' characteristic work is again missing from the cover.
Harris explains that the relationship is just fine, but Riggs is now pursuing his own music career and Iron Maiden simply wanted to find fresh ideas and new artists.

I was influenced from an early age by the works of Derek Riggs, who designed the album covers of the British rock band, Iron Maiden.

His later paintings, which to me were the most inspiring, were more surreal and science-fictional than his early horror covers.
