  Derek Sherinian Interview by Wendy
Derek: I think it was because there was a piano in the house, and I just kind of gravitated towards it when I was younger.
Derek: I think Edward Van Halen was a very huge influence on me just the way that he expressed himself musically and the whole package his heavy tone and the song writing.
Derek: I liked all of them, but I think the Alice Cooper one, the first one in 1989 for the Trash tour was my favorite, it was my first tour and my first time traveling overseas and playing big shows.

 AMZ - July, 1999 - Derek Sherinian
Sherinian's career took off with keyboard duties for "KISS" and "Alice Cooper" tours (you can catch a fleeting glimpse of Sherinian in the movie "Wayne's World").
One slight note of confusion creeps into the works when listening to a track like "Crab Nebulae." Among Sherinian's arsenal is a lead synth that sounds a lot like a guitar, and when employed as on this track, it makes it kind of hard to figure out what parts Garsed is playing.
As all but one song were written by Sherinian and drummer Virgil Donati, Garsed does tend to fade into the mix a bit.

 DPRP Reviews - 2004 - Volume 72 - Derek Sherinian RTR
Derek has once again amassed an impressive cast and I was intrigued to see what input Allan Holdsworth, John Sykes and the little known (to me) Steve Stevens might make.
Derek takes the first mini solo section with a somewhat aggressive guitar like tonality to it, which then moves into the slower mid section instrumental break by John - again a melodic solo before the track returns to the more up-tempo rocky opening.
Derek's fourth solo album hits the stores in early November and I can say that it maybe (or better probably) is his best CD so far.

Sherinian has become the consummate bandleader and virtuoso with few equals; once again, he provides an album that serves as his truth.
Infact i am amazed that this is Sherinians project as he seems to get no space at all and although the previos albums have been in the jazz/fusion genre this is far from it...It is basically reduced to basic prog-metal with some slower songs inbetween but frankly there is not much interest for non-musicians here.
Surprising that even though Derek Sherinian is a keyboard player, he has let the guitarists take the lead on this album and it is the guitarists that give each track their form.

Review: "Sherinian, Derek: Mythology" - Sea of Tranquility - The Web Destination for Progressive Music!
The eight-minute opener "Day of the Dead" is a monster piece, with Wylde and Sherinian laying down some ultra heavy, doomy riffs, in which both players trade off wicked solos before the master Holdsworth comes crashing in with some classy legato wizardry that adds the extra amount of virtuosity to the proceedings.
Sherinian and Stevens instantly bring to mind the vintage instrumental wars of Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer on the 70's fusion inspired "Alpha Burst", a song that had me feeling like I was a teenager all over again listening to Beck's Wired for the first time, complete with raging call-and-answer guitar & synth trade-offs.
Sherinian is cementing his legacy as a musician who is creating instrumental rock records that stand head and shoulders above everyone else.

Especially indelicate looks the CD cover on which Derek demonstrates himself together with his first and last names and the (right!) title of the album in a proud loneliness.

Derek wrote the songs together with Brian Tichy, whom he knew from touring with Billy Idol and the first thing they wrote was the trilogy ‘The Sons of Anu’, featuring Yngwie Malmsteen and Al DiMeola, which is also one of the best songs on the album.
Daring to walk on the thin line of jazz fusion, prog rock and heavy metal, Derek shows all his weapons on the album: intricate melodies, heavy riffs flying all over, rock 'n' roll pumping all the way through and technical chops enough to make any prog fan shit their pants.
The mid-section, in which Derek and Al work in an unbelievable unison line, is one of the biggest highlights of BLACK UTOPIA.

Derek Sherinian : Planet X - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Dream Theater and ex-Alice Cooper keyboardist Derek Sherinian grabs the spotlight with Planet X, leading his own band through a set of instrumentals, mostly co-written with drummer Virgil Donati.
The album is more prog rock than progressive metal, although the compositional influence of Steve Vai pop up here and there, along with King Crimson and other progressive luminaries given to complex, shifting time signatures.
Sherinian has chops to burn, but he plays tastefully and creates textures just as well as he solos; guitarist Brett Garsed and bassist Tony Franklin also turn in fine performances.

If anyone has been following Derek's career from Dream Theater through to Kiss, Alice Cooper, Platypus, Planet X and all the countless projects in between, you will be pleased with this release.
Derek only wrote one song by himself ("Evel Knievel") but invited Simon Phillips, Steven Lukather, Zakk Wylde and Tony Franklin to contribute to the written material.
On a final note: Inertia is a very finely recorded and produced album and the fact that you can hear Derek's selflessness by allowing all his guest musicians to bring their own flavour of music to the album, makes it just so much more diverse and exciting.

Derek Sherinian - Planet X reviewed by The House of Shred
This is not a release that's heavy on guitar, but it does bear the name of a keyboard player, so it's understood.
This is not to say that Garsed didn't pull his weight, but rather it appears that Sherinian wanted to make a record that was a departure from the all-out, heavy shred mayhem of Dream Theater.
Sherinian comes out blazing with the speedy "Money Shot" and shows his originality with some nimble synth workouts that are as strange as they are enjoyable.
