Reason to Rock: Derek and the Dominos
Derek and the Dominos was really the shortest-lived of the bands, producing only one studio album, and never playing in concert with the same configuration that produced the album (Duane Allman being the missing ingredient in the live shows).
And then, of course, there is the fact that “Derek” turned out to be a very transparent guise for Eric, so it is easy to think of this one album as just another of Clapton's solo albums, with a constantly shifting personnel list playing in the background.
In fact, though, Derek and the Dominos was a band with a distinct identity, and their one recorded album was a truly collaborative effort.

Derek and the Dominos was started by Eric Clapton in May 1970, and they only lasted until May 1971.
So while Derek and the Dominos only managed to release one studio album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, (the band broke up during recording their unreleased second album) the first album, Layla is very much worth listening to.
A couple years after Derek and the Dominos broke up, part of their live set from the Fillmore East was released as a two album set.

 Derek& The Dominos
In regards to the sound and songs of those nights, I only recently picked up a copy of the double CD (bootleg) called 'Domino Theory', which is the most accurate of those shows to date.
I personally feel having played all the previous versions to death that all of these versions are superior to the stuff already released, with the exception of 'Little Wing' which sounds best on that boot I mentioned earlier.
I realize that this is very unfair for someone who has been such a huge influence on my music and for that matter, on my life.

Eric Clapton - Derek and The Dominos - Layla & Other Assorted... - Review - Uncut.co.uk
The pseudonym "Derek" was adopted to reflect Clapton's stated desire to be one of the boys in the band rather than a Zeus-like hero.
The two guitarists struck up an immediate affinity and, when Allman was invited to join the sessions, his Promethean qualities totally transformed both the ambition and the execution of the record.
After the Dominos split, Clapton's own heroin habit grew to such chronic proportions that he abandoned music for the next three years.

 Derek and the Dominos
This is a question that’s as old as the blues itself, and it’s certainly relevant when considering Derek and the Dominos’ 1970 album "Layla," the strongest recording of Eric Clapton’s career, and arguably the greatest blues-rock album ever made.
The original idea was to issue an album as the pseudononymous "Derek and the Dominos," packaged in a cover (depicting a female figure by painter Frandsen-de Schonberg that, in retrospect, looks quite a bit like Boyd) devoid of any other info.
Coming to the sessions late in the game (Dave Mason was to have been the Dominos’ second guitarist, but he pulled out after one gig), the moonlighting hero of the Allman Brothers contributed fluid slide work and dexterous leads of his own.

Derek and the Dominos Album Reviews
Many of the dual guitar flights of Clapton and Allman are spellbindingly exhausting, hitting climax upon climax before drifting into blissful melancholy, as on the dramatic piano coda to the title track, which was later used to unforgettable effect in the movie Goodfellas.
The album’s centerpiece, “Layla” was an impassioned love plea to “friend” George Harrison’s wife (hence the proposed anonymity of the Derek & The Dominos moniker, which fooled nobody) that is one of the most dramatic songs in all of rock.
Also, I've always felt that, even without Duane (who doesn't appear as he never was a full time Domino), the Dominos were Eric's most sympathetic support group, and they do nothing here to dispel that thought.

In his liner notes, Anthony DeCurtis calls Live at the Fillmore "a digitally remixed and remastered version of the 1973 Derek and the Dominos double album In Concert, with five previously unreleased performances and two tracks that have only appeared on the four-CD Clapton retrospective, Crossroads." But this does not adequately describe the album.
Live at the Fillmore is not exactly an expanded version of In Concert; it is a different album culled from the same concerts that were used to compi… Read More »
