The Derg was initially supposed to study the grievances of various military units, and investigate abuses by senior officers and staff, and to root out corruption in the military.
The Derg chose Lt. General Aman Andom to be its chairman, and acting head-of-state until the Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen could return from his medical treatment in Europe and assume the throne as a constitutional monarch.
The reign of the Derg in Ethiopia is remembered for the Ethiopian Red Terror in which the government systematically eliminated its opponents between 1975 and 1977 with executions and imprisonments of tens of thousands without trial.

At first, the Derg's officers exercised their influence behind the scenes; only later, during the era of the Provisional Military Administrative Council, did its leaders emerge from anonymity and become both the official as well as the de facto governing personnel.
Although the Derg professed loyalty to the emperor, it immediately began to arrest members of the aristocracy, military, and government who were closely associated with the emperor and the old order.
The Derg's agenda rapidly diverged from that of the reformers of the late imperial period.

And there were certainly far too many blunders committed by the Derg and its associates, than any one would be ready to accept/admit: summary killing, hasty/drastic decisions, policies/ideologies adopted and implemented (without sober planning, people/the country ending up as guinea pigs!) But all these were perhaps dictated by the waves of the times.
All the rest of the story to the final days of the derg is left for other writers and researchers to dwell on.
The Derg was all this and much more, and as such, cannot be recounted in exhaustion in one book.

 Ethiopian Revolution
Despite his standing, however, General Aman was almost immediately at odds with a majority of the Derg's members on three major issues: the size of the Derg and his role within it, the Eritrean insurgency, and the fate of political prisoners.
Aman claimed that the 120- member Derg was too large and too unwieldy to function efficiently as a governing body; as an Eritrean, he urged reconciliation with the insurgents there; and he opposed the death penalty for former government and military officials who had been arrested since the revolution began.
The Derg immediately found itself under attack from civilian groups, especially student and labor groups who demanded the formation of a "people's government" in which various national organizations would be represented.

Subsequent to the downfall of the Derg regime in 1991, the EPRDF has inherited the entire workforce of the EWP excepting its commander-in-chief, Mengistu Haile Mariam and some senior officers who fled the country.
Ironically, many of the hardhearted Marxist zealots and high-ranking officials of the Derg who played awful roles in the military dictatorship have sought sanctuary in the most unlikely of all places, the United States, and not the most-favored Soviet Union.
Phenomenally, the Derg’s downfall coincided with the demise of the Soviet Union.

But for us survived the Derg era, it is clear for us that it’s destructive goal with immeasurable ethnic hate towards the people of Tigreans or Oromos, for example, and that would devastate the Unity of Ethiopia.
It could be understood that EPRDF had a Political Ad Gentes in terms of reaching out to all Ethiopian ethnic groups by affirming their role as a people of Ethiopia in terms of culture and language so that they may make the entire tapestry of Ethiopia beautiful.

As the letter the former Derg officials have submitted to the Prime Minister reveals Ethiopia was faced with a unique opportunity in the immediate aftermath of the 1974 revolution to tread upon a way of constitutionalism and development in all spheres.
The Derg trial does not have the appearance of one-on-one between the prosecution and the defense; rather, it is two against one as the courts, albeit in certain aspects independent, cannot be viewed as impartial.
Contrary to this, the Derg officials do not seem to be deeply moved by the atrocities perpetrated during the heyday of the Derg; for them the vengeful trial might have obliged them to think the EPRDF and the victims as one and the same.
