DEEP BURNS OF THE KNEE: JOINT CAPSULE RECONSTRUCTION WITH DERMIS GRAFT
The advantages of autologous grafting of the dermis are: the facility and rapidity of removal thanks to the use of the Padgett dermotome, its resistance, and its limited post-operative reabsorption, which normally does not exceed 20% of the grafted implant.
The trophic function of the dermis is probably guaranteed by the fact that on the articular face of the re-formed capsule the reconstruction of the synovial membrane is probably a result of slipping of the synovial membrane from the residual capsule.
The sheet of dermis was sutured, with the epideurnic surface towards the joint, to the residual capsular tissue or to the periosteum by means of Dexon or Vicryl 2/0 stitches.

The 3 skin layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat
At the bottom of the epidermis is a very thin membrane, called the basement membrane, which attaches the epidermis firmly, though not rigidly, to the layer below.
The junction between the epidermis and the dermis is not straight but undulates like rolling hills - more markedly so in some areas of the body than others.
They open up in hot weather, bringing lots of red blood cells - and hence a pink flush -to the skin, and close down in the cold; this is why cold skin often looks blue.

Consequently, when the epidermis is carefully removed, a smooth layer is revealed, sometimes known as the hyaline layer, which gives the characteristic grain surface of leather.
Toward the center of the dermis (or corium) the fibers are coarser and stronger, and the predominant angle at which they are woven can indicate the properties the resultant leather will display.
The interior of the dermis is generally the strongest part of the skin.

ABSTRACT The initiation of the development of skin appendages (hair/feathers/scales) requires a signal from the competent dense dermis to the epidermis (Dhouailly, 1977).
In recent years, a few studies have focused on the development of the dorsal dermis from the somitic dermomyotome.
Our first aim in this review is to attempt to reconcile the available data on the origin of the dorsal dermis and summarize the present knowledge on the molecular mechanisms implicated in dermal lineage induction.
