| | AASLD: Vitamin K Fails to Boost Bone Mineral Density in Primary Biliary Cirrhosis |
 | | BOSTON, MA -- October 31, 2003 -- British researchers were disappointed to find that vitamin K did not increase bone mineral density in a randomised trial with patients suffering a mild form of cirrhosis. |
 | | In addition, all of the patients were given 1 gm oral calcium daily, and, starting 1 month before the study, 20 mcg vitamin D daily. |
 | | While vitamin K did not seem to convey any benefit to the PBC patients, Dr. Gleeson said it did have its expected effect on osteocalcin, a protein specific to vitamin K. Osteocalcin fell in the active group, he said, but not in the placebo group. |
