Derngate known through the ages as 'Dearne Gate', 'Darngate' and 'Dernegate' was once really a gate.
At that time the rest of 'Derngate', up to St Giles Square, was known as Swineswell Street, (this was because the pigs were driven out of the town that way).
Derngate had rustic cottages and gardens on either side.

Scotsman.com News - Features - The House that Mack Built
At first sight, 78 Derngate looks like a house that life has passed by - a narrow, brick Georgian terraced house, somewhat sidelined on what is now a busy traffic artery in and out of Northampton town centre.
Two years later, the 78 Derngate Northampton Trust was formed, taking a 99-year sub-lease and embarking on a £1.5million restoration of the house, using the adjoining property, number 80, as an exhibition and circulation space.
In looking at 78 Derngate as his last major commission, it is tempting to speculate whether it represents a defiant swansong or a search for new direction.

From these sources, it would seem that in the late spring of 1916 Bassett-Lowke had his eye on this house, conveniently close to his work in Kingswell Street, relatively cheap, being a hundred years old, but in a street that was seeing something of a revival.
Although Bassett-Lowke told Howarth in 1946 that the structural alterations were already taking place when he met Mackintosh, it is possible that Mackintosh took the basic idea as shown in the Anderson plans, and suggested carrying the bay up the entire elevation, creating the veranda and balcony to the bedrooms.
