Furthermore the glider could be released at some distance from the actual target, making it more difficult for the enemy to guess their intentions.
Larger gliders were also used to land heavy equipment like anti-tank guns and jeeps, which was a major improvement in the power available to the otherwise lightly-armed paratroop forces.
Powered gliders are now categorized into gliders with retractable propellers/engines, which can be flown with an ordinary glider pilot license (GPL), and touring motor gliders (TMG), which require a specific license extension to the standard GPL.

Otto Lilienthal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Otto Lilienthal (23 May 1848 – 10 August 1896), the German "Glider King", was a pioneer of human aviation.
Lilienthal did basic research in precisely describing the flight of birds, especially of storks, and used polar diagrams for describing the aerodynamics of their wings.
Lilienthal helped to prove that heavier-than-air flight was practical without flapping wings, laying the groundwork for the Wright brothers a few years later to build the first successful powered aircraft.

There are existing drawings for two of the first sold gliders: the draft for "Seiler's glider" and for the "Modell Lambert".
This glider was built with the same principles of construction as the "normal glider".
At the time of Lilienthal's death, the "Gelenkflügelapparat" (Glider with Jointed Wings), which would allow a mechanical shift in the centre of gravity for the pilot, was almost ready to be used for test flights.

 Lilienthal – The "Flying Man"
Lilienthal's first glider, the 1891 Derwitzer Glider, was constructed of rods of peeled willow covered by highly stretched strong cotton fabric.
The glider originally had a wingspan of 25 feet (7.6 meters).á During the course of the experiments, he reduced its span to 18 feet (5.5 feet).
To fly the glider, Lilienthal had to crawl under the craft, position his arms in a set of cuffs, grasp a bar near the front edge of the wings, and run down a slope.

Other examples were the military gliders used in the second world war to support paratroop operations.
While early gliders have had glide ratios below 20 to 1, the latest open-class competition models can exceed ratios of 60 to 1 and maintain this efficiency over a wide range of air-speeds.
This does not apply in the United Kingdom, where glider pilots are regulated by the British Gliding Association using a "badge" system, and do not have to be licensed with the Civil Aviation Authority.

There are parachutes, kites, lighter than air craft (balloons/airships), gliders and powered aircraft, which all have some ability to fly.
In recent years, use of parasails, hang gliders and similar craft have erased most distinction between parachutes and gliders.
The wings of most gliders and aircraft are aerofoils, but kites use the principles of aerofoils also.

An aerofoil is a surface that adds lift when air moves over it.
A glider is usually defined as an aerofoil craft that relies on starting height rather than its own generated energy.
But having an internal source of energy (an engine) doesn't always mean it is an aircraft rather than a glider; the engine may be so weak that it doesn't influence the craft's flight.
