Perhaps most notable among these is Gustav Mahler whose songs with orchestral accompaniments drawn from the collection include the Lieder aus "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" (first published 1899) and movements in his Symphony No. 2, Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 4.
He also used the collection for a number of songs with piano accompaniment.

Clemens Brentano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the years between 1808 and 1818, he lived mostly in Berlin, and from 1819 to 1824 in Dülmen, Westphalia.
Brentano assisted Ludwig Achim von Arnim, his brotherin-law, in the collection of folk-songs forming Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1806-1808), which Gustav Mahler drew upon for his song cycle.
Brentano, whose early writings were published under the pseudonym Maria, belonged to the Heidelberg group of German romantic writers, and his works are marked by excess of fantastic imagery and by abrupt, bizarre modes of expression.

Notwithstanding the importance of his own poems that he set in his early songs, it was the Wunderhorn texts that inspired his vocal writing for a good dozen years.
Surprisingly, considering his interest in poetry, the anthology Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn), compiled in 1805 by von Arnim and Brentano, only came to Mahler's attention in 1888.
But then the Wunderhorn folk anthology aroused the composer's already deep affinity for those things which filled its pages: the beauty of nature, the innocence of children, the standard Germanic mythical figures - ghosts, supernatural heroes, gnomes, and spirits - and for the myriad emotions covering the gamut from simple joy to profound despair.

The major disappointment, however, is the Knaben Wunderhorn cycle with Norman and Shirley-Quirk.
She is in glorious voice but sounds too stiad and self-involved, and he simply has no proper German style--one keeps thinking that an English gentleman is trying not very hard to impersonate the tragic, bumptious soldiers that are the chief characters in the male songs.

Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Miraculous Horn) was an assemblage of folksongs and folksong-style poems collected and adapted in 1805 and 1808 by poets Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano to reflect their concept of German folk poetry.
By applying his personal experiences to reinterpret literary thought--something he was to do all his life in almost every composition he penned--he was able to create musical settings that elevated poetry beyond the realm of fairy tale and neomedievalism.
