The project took root at the Des Moines Art Center a few years ago when the artist became intrigued by the dense, pewter-colored limestone used by architect Eliel Saarinen to construct the first of the Art Center’s three buildings.
The Des Moines Art Center (which doesn’t like to call itself a museum) prefers to be known as a user-friendly place where you can come acquaint yourself with art, but not feel overwhelmed by structural immensity.
Recognized by international art critics as a world-class museum in the heart of the Midwest, the Des Moines Art Center has amassed major works of contemporary art from the nineteenth century to the present.

The Des Moines Art Center is an art museum, with an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture, modern art and mixed media.
The original museum wing was designed in a combination of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles by Eliel Saarinen in 1945 and completed in 1948.
This wing was designed to allow as much natural ambient light in as possible, but the Art Center later decided to cover the external windows with rattan blinds when concerns over light damage to the paintings arose.

Jaycees and guests meet at the Art Center at the appointed time, rendezevous with the guide, and tour the center.  After the tour, attendees would be free to either examine the exhibits more closely or leave, as they wish.
Diana Banks, an Education Assistant for the Des Moines Art Center, is acting as liason for this project.  She said a tour would include a “Docent” (a volunteer art expert lecturer and museum guide) who would provide the guided tour of the premises.

 Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972 - 1985
At her untimely death in 1985 at the age of 36, Mendieta played a critical yet under-recognized role in the land, body, and feminist art of the 1970s and 80s, which is only now coming into focus.
Prior to traveling to Des Moines, this exhibition was hosted by the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Julia P. Herzberg is a specialist in art of Latin America and independent curator and her 1998 dissertation, "Ana Mendieta: The Iowa Years: A Critical Study, 1969 through 1977," brought to light critical information about Mendieta's formative influences and the impact of the Intermedia Program at the University of Iowa.
