The Vanished Gallery: The Desaparecidos of Argentina   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Desaparecidos is the Spanish word for "The Disappeared." For thousands of Argentine families, this word has become a symbol of a long harrowing nightmare.
In a coup on March 24, 1976, a military junta seized power in Argentina and went on a campaign to wipe out left-wing terrorism with terror far worse than the one they were combating.
These pages are a humble attempt to bring the voices of the desaparecidos and their loved ones to the world.

Splendid: Departments: LiveLine: Juno, Desaparecidos, The Prom
Desaparecidos strike a blend between the heavy, angular math rock of Saddle Creek labelmates Cursive and the more instantly catchy pop/punk of, say, the Pixies.
Desaparecidos was basically conceived as an excuse for Conor to rock out, which makes the band seem one-dimensional.
They failed to lend much in the way of variety or dynamics to their songs, all of which were full-throttle, all the time, with Conor screaming his head off throughout.

Desaparecidos (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Desaparecidos was an American indie/punk rock side project headed by singer/guitarist Conor Oberst, the frontman of the indie band Bright Eyes.
Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Desaparecidos' lyrics were political in nature, and are about the state of affairs in America.
"Desaparecidos" means literally "the ones who disappeared" in Spanish, and is a reference to people who were arrested by various South American military governments and then vanished without a trace.

 Desaparecidos, A Festering Wound
The fate of the desaparecidos - political prisoners who "disappeared" after being arrested - continue to needle governments, negotiators and non-governmental organisations alike and pose a serious ethical dilemma to the international community.
Those opposed to the ICC taking on the case of the desaparecidos argue the matter cannot rightly be tackled because the Court is not to be retroactive.
The organisations grouping relatives of desaparecidos in Argentina are bitterly divided between those, like the Grandmothers, who prefer a moderate path such as legal actions to recover their grandchildren, and the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, whose traditional leadership has taken a more radical, purist approach.

Desaparecidos: A louder, harder new musical direction from the voice of Bright Eyes.
A supple Omaha five-piece, Desaparecidos races through blind alleys and hairpin turns with the steely nerves of a professional race car driver; a rack-and-pinion rock outfit that has turned the corner on its peers, thanks both to its big power-chord sound and the impassioned vocals of Oberst.
Anchored to a big guitar sound, Desaparecidos' debut, Read Music/Speak Spanish (to be released Monday, February 11), works with broad strokes, delivering the kind of raucous, straightforward energy that drove post-punk pioneers like The Replacements and The Lemonheads.

Desaparecidos amasses its corpulent rock around the same voice of Oberst, but where introspective whispers once dripped with despondency now sear with societal scorn.
All of these neoteric rock and roll ethics are succinctly compacted in the closing track, 'Hole in One,' that is omnipotent enough to knock you on your ass, but sweet and catchy enough for you to come back again and again and again.
However, that sentimental feel is soon obliterated by mind mauling distortion and lyrics of liberalism while a solitary fact resides in your mind - that this is indeed the hopeful future of rock, not a dismal listen back to the forefathers.

Forced disappearance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The victim is first kidnapped, then illegally detained in concentration camps, often tortured, and finally executed and their corpse hidden.
In Spanish, "disappeared people" are called "desaparecidos", a term which specifically refers to the mostly South American victims of state terrorism during the 1970s and the 1980s, in particular concerning Operation Condor.
According to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which entered into force on July 1, 2002, "forced disappearances" qualify as a crime against humanity, which thus cannot be subject to statute of limitation.

village voice > music > Desaparecidos' Read Music/Speak Spanish by Anthony Miccio
Desaparecidos are a five-piece out of Omaha, Nebraska, led by Conor Oberst (the voice of mondo-melodramatic folk-pop conglomerate Bright Eyes) and Denver Dalley (a really big Weezer fan).
In a music scene focused on adolescent fears, Desaparecidos sound strikingly post-collegiate in their angst—Oberst himself, it turns out, dropped out of college.
Desaparecidos don't settle for vague slogans like Rage Against the Machine or (please forgive me) Fugazi, and passion and melodicism keep Read Music/Speak Spanish from devolving into mere harangue.

Desaparecidos - Audio samples, biography and discography from Bands On Demand Indie Rock guide on UGO
Desaparecidos is the side project of Bright Eyes singer/songwriter Conor Oberst; the name is taken for the colloquial term for political dissidents and innocent victims kidnapped by select South American dictators in the 1970s.
The subject matter is equally socially aware; if Bright Eyes is Oberst's outlet for his personal feelings, Desaparecidos is his means of social commentary.
Why We Like 'Em Those expecting a Bright Eyes redux when listening to Desaparecidos might be a bit disappointed - Oberst is obviously a man with a lot of different things to say, and in this group, he's venting his views on materialism and other ills of society.

While Bright Eyes could be deemed the epitome of emo music due to Oberst's habit of displaying his uninhibited anguish for himself, with Desaparecidos, Spanish for ‘the disappeared,’ Oberst shifts to crooning over the all too familiar rotting suburbia.
As part of Desaparecidos, Oberst takes on a new form, one, which displays more social anger rather than social awkwardness.

Oberst's outlook on society is definitely cynical, as he spews lines like, "There are no more art forms now only capitalism," yet he defies his own words by creating music that is both thoughtfully agitated and artistically interesting.
