Although the band are usually a bunch of jokesters on stage, tonight they kept the witty banter to a minimum and plowed through their set, several times barely even pausing between songs.
Desaparecidos was basically conceived as an excuse for Conor to rock out, which makes the band seem one-dimensional.
However, I heard from a friend the next day that the band had announced that this would be their last show for some time, and that they were going to take a break for a while.

Desaparecidos (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Desaparecidos were an American indie / punk rock side project headed by singer/guitarist Conor Oberst, the frontman of the emo / folk band Bright Eyes.
Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Desaparecidos' lyrics are political in nature, and are about the state of affairs in America.
The band was both lauded and criticized for its intentionally raw sound following the release of Read Music/Speak Spanish.

 Buyer beware (Metro Times Detroit)
So Desaparecidos’ real accomplishment here is distilling that deeply personal, um, vibe, undercurrent, bottling it up, mixing it with protest music and then spraying it all over their ringer-T-shirt-wearing captive audience.
This is a band that took copious notes listening first to Nirvana and then discovering that the Pixies played the chorus against the verse earlier and better.
The band is on the front lines of the battle for the heartland — what was once a flyover is now a booming market — and unlike the folks from whom they copped their name, they thankfully still live in a country where they can spread the word about the carnage.

At fourteen years of age, Oberst was singer and guitarist of Commander Venus, an indie rock band, in 1994.

The band set out headlining a club tour before the CD caught the ear of alt rockers Jimmy Eat World, a band that throttled back its edgy punk sound on their last album, Bleed American, and as a result garnered both radio airplay and a new, sizable national audience.
The band quickly saw their live audience grow from 300 to 500 a night to 3,000 to 5,000 a night.
The band was slated to play at Chicago's Fireside Theater that same evening as it winds down a tour that ends with a show at Sokol Auditorium Aug. 9 with Neva Dinova, This Just In, and tour mates Rilo Kiley, the most recent band to join the Saddle Creek Records roster.

This was the first night of the band's tour with Jimmy Eat World, and aside from a few technical difficulties, Desaparecidos proved to be worthy of accompanying the headliners.
The four band members continued their flawless performance with the crowd-pleasing songs "Just Watch the Fireworks," "Authority Song" and "No Sensitivity." They then announced that "The Middle," the band's most commercially successful song, would be the last.
The band members' genuine gratitude and unified perfection is sure to turn those familiar with a few songs from the radio into full-blown fans.

Desaparecidos was formed by McElroy and Oberst late last year as a rock band to counter Bright Eyes' more eclectic, confessional, indie-folk sound.
The band has been practicing since before Christmas, though few people have been privy to their music.
But with Conor in the band, we'll probably get some attention that we wouldn't have otherwise, which is great.

A supple Omaha five-piece, Desaparecidos races through blind alleys and hairpin turns with the steely nerves of a professional race car driver; a rack-and-pinion rock outfit that has turned the corner on its peers, thanks both to its big power-chord sound and the impassioned vocals of Oberst.
Perhaps that's another reason Oberst found himself longing to be in a band again, because he and his bandmates are all such good friends.
He just got out of the studio where he was laying down tracks for a forthcoming album, scheduled for release in the fall, and he's already pulling together the tracks that will appear on a teaser EP in April or May, which he'll sell during a spring tour.

Oberst is a talented lyricist, writing memorable evocative words, but has been criticised for the fact that some of his songs, (Big Picture, the first song on Lifted; The story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground for example) are poetry with faint music in the background.

It's also a group with a politically charged name: the original Desaparecidos were political dissidents in Chile and Argentina who were "disappeared" in retaliation for their beliefs.
Much like the Pixies or Built to Spill, Desaparecidos has a way of walking the razor's edge between catchiness and hardness; the melodies nudge their way into your memory without becoming too sweet or cloying, and the songs are rollicking, edgy and powerful without the alienation of hyper-aggressive faux-punk postures.
And though the members of Desaparecidos might be willing to stick their necks out in observing the problems they see in modern America, Baum says the band isn't here to provide answers for what ought to happen next.

Omaha's Desaparecidos (Spanish for "the disappeared") arrived at its revolutionary dance from a different direction: Leader Conor Oberst spent his initial years in the apolitical realm of the heartbroken ballad with his group Bright Eyes.
Inside, the band intersperses its lyrics with an Omaha real-estate company's proposal to bulldoze an agricultural area and build a sprawling residential subdivision.
A fist-raised cross between Weezer and Superchunk, the band uses heavy, distorted guitar lines and pounding drums to create catchy, pogo-ready tunes that should rocket the group's anti-consumerist message into the mosh pit and beyond.

Oberst may be better known for his confessional songwriting and storytelling, but Desaparecidos is nothing of the sort.
Indeed, similar vocal melodies and song structure are present, but the guitars are loud and distorted, the bass is pounding, and the drums and keyboards round out this hi-energy, pop-rock band without the lyrical focus of personal relationships.

Some might be keen on labeling Deseparecidos as the noisy garage band flipside of Bright Eyes ( Connor Oberst's better-known, sometimes angst-ridden, but mostly quiet and soulful alter ego).
Oberst's vocals tie it all together but the rest of the band has a lot to offer.
They include Denver Dalley, Landon Hedges (of The Good Life), Ian McElroy and Matt Baum (both have toured with Bright Eyes) and their instrumental support of Oberst's anguished social criticism is dramatic.

However, I am glad that the Faint will be famous, because it means more attention will come to their labelmates, Desaparecidos, whose social acuity is both sharp and approachable enough to perk up the mind of your average listener.
But, unlike many more overtly political bands, Desaparecidos' tactics of subversion do not involve flag-burning, name-calling, or generalizations (factors that alienate the non-radical masses quicker than fast-track legislation).
Instead, their lyrics are written from the point of the view of the average person, or rather, the very personal point of view of Oberst, who just so happens to be broad and honest enough that he's easy to relate to.
