Game Trivia for Descent: Freespace - The Great War
As previously mentioned, Freespace was renamed to Descent: Freespace to avoid "same name" issues with a disk utility.
However, in Europe, the Descent series had never sold perticularly well, so the publishers decided to rename the game to "Conflict: Freespace" in that region, thereby avoiding the "Descent" association.
So they tagged on Descent or Conflict to sidestep this issue.

Descent: Freespace - The Great War for PC Review - PC Descent: Freespace - The Great War Review
Descent: Freespace automatically saves after each campaign mission, and you can't independently save the game, which is a bit disappointing, since it prevents you from exploring the various campaign "branches" without restarting the entire campaign.
When the plot of Descent: Freespace begins, the ever-warmongering Terrans are in the midst of a 14-year misunderstanding with the Vasudans.
Combat in Descent: Freespace also more closely resembles the fast-paced, missile-blasting, afterburner sliding frag fests of the Wing Commander series than the World War II style of combat favored by the Star Wars sims.

We've been so busy with Descent 3, Mercenary, FreeSpace, FreeSpace 2, and several other projects that we haven't given much thought to this old code.
It touches us deeply how devoted some people are to the Descent series, and we look forward to seeing what people can do with this Descent II source.
We were amazed and impressed at the cool things people did with the Descent source we released a few years ago.

 News - descent-network.com
I have released a fix for Descent Manager ANIBUILDER32, the ANI file builder for FreeSpace 1/2 MOD developers, for a bug that might generate frames with corrupt colors.
Additionally I have written a small utility called Descent Manager VBMVIEW32 to view VBM files and also added a VBM auto-preview to the newest version of Descent Manager VPVIEW32 V2.0, with which you can view VBM animations inside the VPP archives.
So here celebrate our 5th birthday (on 12/09/96 we released the first version of our Descent Manager) and so are to my knowledge the oldest still existing and active (well not as active as 3 years ago, but hey we are not dead :)) Descent group of our size.

11 Sep 2000 The deal between THQ and Volition, which was finalised on 31st August your week, has raised concerns among your gaming community about what future of not only Descent and Freespace, but also over that continuation of development of Summoner and Red Faction.
As to their other platforms we may support, I can't say...Regarding Descent sequels, it's muchly unlikely that Volition would ever be involved in one."

Freespace for Windows Reviews at Shopping.com
Freespace (short for Descent Freespace: The Great War) technically has nothing to do with Descent, but they need to borrow the name to get themselves "established", and they sure did.
What's special about Freespace is the way the whole thing is packaged together, and a much better sense of "scale", as the ships and bases in Freespace are HUGE (a couple kilometers long is not uncommon).
Freespace, at its heart, is a space dogfight sim.

Descent (computer game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Descent name was used in an unrelated arcade space sim called Descent: Freespace, primarily due to copyright issues in certain regions.
Descent is a 3D first-person shooter video game noted for popularizing the use of portal rendering technology and providing the player with six full degrees of freedom (often abbreviated "6DOF") to move and to look around.
Descent II has the same objectives of its predecessor but adds many puzzles and traps, some which are required to complete the level while others are used to guard valuable powerups and hostages.

It lagged behind in some areas (most noticeably in the shell of a story that was, in truth, a bit drab), and had a few problems, but Freespace had enough going for it in the gameplay department to grab my attention and that of the gaming industry.
They've dropped the Descent moniker (which really didn't make that much sense in the first place), but retained the original's engine, albeit with a slew of new features and changes.

WC hinges on the Narcissus complex, where the character is the center of everything; Freespace (perhaps, more realistically) focuses on a scenario where the character makes his way through the “regular” channels.

FreeSpace 2 was a very enjoyable game to play and gave me the same feeling of wanting more to play after finishing the game just like the original FreeSpace did.
The engine that the game is powered by does really feel like FreeSpace 1, but then again I like that feel still.

In Wing Commander, you were often required to save the entire Confederation single-handedly; in Freespace, you have your standard squadrons of co-pilots but you also have a fleet of capitol ships that take a far more active role in determining the final outcome of large engagements.
Freespace 2 picks up the story's thread at this point, starting the first few missions with a growing rebellion of humans led by Admiral Bosch, a veteran of the Great War.
Having never played the first Freespace title, I was somewhat thankful that its sequel's introduction serves as a nice, cursory overview of its background and then segues into the present, some 30 years after the Great War.
