Othello - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Othello and Desdemona in Venice" by Théodore Chassériau (1819–1856)
Othello is referred to as a "Moor"; for Elizabethan Englishmen, this term could refer to the Arabs of North Africa, or to the people we would now call "fl" (that is, people of sub-Saharan African descent).
Othello's tragic flaw is thus that he is unable to cope with the notion that the relationship between signifier and signified is arbitrary.

Desdemona (Othello) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Desdemona is a fictional character in the play Othello by William Shakespeare.
She is both lightskinned and innocent; Shakespeare uses her as a symbol of purity to contrast malevolent Iago and his worldly wife, Emilia.
Desdemona is often viewed as a self-sacrificing Christ figure somewhat like Cordelia from another Shakespeare play, King Lear.

The Role Of Desdemona In Shakespeare's Othello
By marrying Othello, Desdemona was showing that she was strong enough and educated enough to break the societal confines of passivity for women (Walker 2).
Desdemona’s concise statement about her love was revealed with balance and health when she said: I saw Othello’s visage in his mind, And to his honours and his valiant parts Did I my soul and fortunes consecrate.
Desdemona, although an intelligent woman seeking liberation, fell into Iago’s trap because she loved Othello and was upset that he had considered her a “whore.” She was a very trusting person and did not think that Iago would her hurt.

William Rudolf Long and Insults and Desdemona and Othello and Shakespeare and rage
Othello has already concluded that the women are unreliable, either that they are deceptive or are "subtile whores" or "simple bawds." His tidal wave of personal anguish cascades over all who come in contact with him.
Desdemona immediately realizes his perverse intent: "What horrible fancy's this (4.2.26)?" Instead of answering Desdemona, Othello turns to Emilia and treats her as a madam.
What he really wants from Desdemona is not her admission, not her words of comfort, but for her to hear him as he speaks his protest to the world and the gods and whoever will listen about how his inner collapse (see mini-essay on Othello and Job) has utterly destroyed his soul.

 Othello and Desdemona's Motivations
Even if Iago's construal of Desdemona's actions in the context of the alleged Venetian practice of feminine infidelity might easily be rebutted [fear and attraction, for example, are not mutually incompatible emotions], Desdemona herself has provided enough doubts of her sole fidelity to Othello to make one wonder.
My conclusion about Desdemona at this point is that she probably is fully committed to Othello but probably also overwhelmed by the heady atmosphere of intrigue and love at the center of Cyprus politics.
Her love for Othello might be true and faithful, but as Shakespeare knows, love doesn't easily flow in nicely carved rivulets, even if the institution that carves those little rivers is marriage.

 Othello Summary
Othello, Moorish commander of the armed forces of Venice, had secretly married Desdemona, the much younger daughter of the respected Senator Brabantio.
When Desdemona appeared and professed her love for Othello, the Duke cleared him of wrongdoing, saying to Brabantio, "If virtue no delighted beauty lack, / Your son-in-law is far more fair than fl." Then the Duke directed his courageous commander to lead the Venetian forces to Cyprus in its defense.
Othello lunged at Iago, wounding him, but was restrained by the nobles from finishing the deed.

The Discourse of Honesty and Whoredom in Othello
Desdemona is a "public commoner" (a euphemism for "whore"), that even the "bawdy wind, that kisses all it meets" does not wish to hear of (IV.ii.73, 78); she is an "Impudent strumpet," and the "cunning whore of Venice
In the moments before and after killing Desdemona, Othello refers to her as "perjur'd woman," "strumpet," "whore," "false," "a liar," and "foul," playing as one thundering chord all of the play's notes of honesty and whoredom.
The tragedy of the fall of Othello and the deaths of Desdemona and Emilia is perhaps also the tragedy of the dominance of the views of Joseph Swetnam over those of Thomas Gataker and the anonymous author of A Defence of Womenkinde.

 EDSITEment - Lesson Plan
Othello as a stranger in a strange land: In order to understand how and why Iago's rhetoric might work so effectively against Othello, students should also be made aware of the powerful general's vulnerability: he is a Moor in an alien society, first in the city of Venice and then on the isle of Cyprus.
In short, Othello is an "other," and the fact that he is a Moor surrounded by Italians and Cypriots only emphasizes his difference.
In the play, she did not effectively deter Othello from altering his misguided opinion that she is a whore; inevitably, her failure frustrates many students who say, "If she just spoke up for herself things will be different!".

In the last scene of Othello, Desdemona recovers long enough from the smothering that her jealous husband has inflicted upon her to pronounce her complete innocence, and with her last breath tells Emilia, "a guiltless death I die" (V, ii., l.120).
Plainly, Iago has deceived Othello into believing that his beautiful young wife has committed adultery with his once-trusted second in command, Cassio.
That being so, Desdemona is clearly innocent of the charges embodied in Iago's cunning innuendoes, and is a victim who does not deserve the tragic end that she suffers.
