BYU NewsNet - "When It Comes Down To It, The Tribune Has More Holy Cows Than We Do"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Although the Deseret News no longer has a team completely devoted to in-depth and investigative reporting, each of the reporters is expected to continually come up with ideas for more in-depth coverage of their beat, especially for the weekend editions.
Deseret News City Editor, Anglyn Hutchinson, said she thinks much of the perceived bias in the News can be attributed to predetermined ideas about a church-owned paper.
As often as the News is accused of having a Mormon bias, the Tribune is accused of having an anti-Mormon bias.

 Deseret Book at AllExperts
Deseret Book is the largest Latter-day Saint book publisher and also owns a chain of LDS bookstores in the western United States.
The Deseret News bought out the Sunday School Union in 1948 to become sole owner of the bookstore, but both the Deseret News and Deseret Book are now subsidiaries of the Deseret Management Corporation, which manages several for-profit assets of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Deseret Book did not accept manuscripts for publication until the 1940s when the company made a push for new authors.

The early issues of the News were printed in the Mint on South Temple just east of what is now the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, until August 1850, when the print shop was moved to the Council House, located across the street on the southwest corner of South Temple and Main streets.
The News for October 5, 1850, explained that lack of paper would delay the next number until October 19, and the issue for that date announced that until further notice, the paper would appear every other Saturday-which indeed was the case for nos.
The Deseret Weekly, with a reduced page-size of about 30 x 20 cm., was published in semi-annual volumes until December 10, 1898, when it was brought to a close.

 Utah History Encyclopedia
Besides its function as a regular newspaper, the Deseret News was filled with church-related items, and its columns reflected Mormon theology and values - from millennialism and the "Lost Tribes" of Israel to approved dance styles and women's clothing.
One notable example of the News approach to sensationalism was a story in November 1872, when Victoria Woodhull and her sister Tennessee Claflin published a story in their "Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly" charging intimacy between henry Ward Beecher and the wife of Beecher's close friend Theodore Tilton.
Although its approach is influenced by the tenor of the modern newspaper world--with innovative pictures, considerable use of color, interpretive stories and the adoption of the so-called "quick-read" format - its position in the community seems secure.

Deseret News Sues Tribune - News about religious cults and sects
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Turning the tables in Utah's newspaper battle, the Deseret News sued The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday, alleging the Tribune tried to stifle competition by postponing the News' move to morning publication.
The 65,000-circulation paper, which is owned by the Mormon church, is expected to make the switch this fall, which would bring it into direct competition with the 135,000-circulation Tribune, which also publishes in the morning.
The Tribune's managers accused MediaNews and the Deseret News of colluding in the deal and tried unsuccessfully to block the sale in court, saying The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was trying to squelch its voice.
