The Painted Desert Inn was the vision of Herbert David Lore.
Due to the structural problems of the inn and the movement towards a “Rustic” style of architecture in the parks during the 1930s, the “Stone Tree House” was redesigned.
A seam of bentonite clay caused the foundation of the inn to shift as the clay swells and shrinks in response to moisture.

Painted Desert Inn Museum and Bookstore, a National Historic Landmark within Petrified Forest National Park, opened May 24, 2006 after 18 months of much needed rehabilitation.
The building will function only as a museum and bookstore.
Some work continues and displays are in the works, but the building is open and ready for your visit!
