On August 8, Iraq declared parts of Kuwait to be extensions of the Iraqi province of Basra and the rest to be the 19th province of Iraq.
Rarely in urban combat does the fighting range exceed 1 km, a range at which theoretically the M1 Abrams tank was vulnerable to the 125 mm gun of the Iraqi T-72 tanks.
However, the greatest amount of bombs was dropped during two sustained bombing campaigns: Operation Desert Strike, which lasted a few weeks in September 1996, and Operation Desert Fox, in December 1998.

The remainder of the month of August and most of September were devoted to maintenance of vehicles and section equipment, individual common task training, issue of desert gear, equipment deployment, personnel manifesting and limited time off for the soldiers.
The men were billeted in grain storage warehouses at a dock until they moved to the desert.
The men were glad to finally get out of the port on 21 October, headed for their first position in the desert.

I'll let you be the judge as to why it took place, and why it ended almost as quickly as it began.
Since "Desert Fox" there have been a number of incidents involving Allied aircraft in the "no fly" zones of Iraq, so many that I created a new page detailing those events.

I have not climbed either Desert Shield or Disco Inferno, though I am interested in both and have talked with folks who have climbed both...here's what I've heard.
Disco Inferno is a system which lies to the left of Desert Shield on the same formation.
My idea is to climb the first three of Desert shield and camp out on the ledge at three, sending both the Desert Shield and the Disco Inferno upper pitches from there over the course of about 3 days.

The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait during the early morning hours of 2 August 1990 initiated a chain of events leading to the largest deployment and subsequent combat use of Army missiles in U.S. history.

Prior to World War I, under the Anglo-Ottoman Convention of 1913, Kuwait was considered to be an autonomous caza within Ottoman Iraq.
On January 12, 1991 the United States Congress authorized the use of military force to drive Iraq out of Kuwait.
