  Italica - Desiderio da Settignano
Desiderio da Settignano was a sculptor of considerable talent, whose work is fairly representative of artistic creativity in Florence during the 14th Century.
Together with Antonio Rossellino and Mino da Fiesole he belonged to the second generation of sculptors that was responsible for developing and transforming the discoveries of the first Renaissance artists: Lorenzo Ghiberti, Filippo Brunelleschi, Luca della Robbia and Donatello.
The exhibition is divided into thematic sections, each intending to exploit Desiderio's preferred subjects and styles - the secular or sacred bust, the three-dimensional sculpture, the devotional bas-relief and the decorative sculpture - and to encourage comparisons that may provide a greater insight into the artist's work.

Vasari mentions a marble bust by Desiderio of Marietta degli Strozzi, which for many years was held to be identical with a very beautiful bust bought in 1878 from the Strozzi family for the Berlin Museum.
The Berlin Museum also owns a colored plaster bust of an Urbino lady by Desiderio, the model for which is in the possession of the Earl of Wemyss.

National Gallery of Art-Desiderio da Settignano: Sculptor of Renaissance Florence
Working in Florence in the mid-fifteenth century, possibly taught by Donatello, Desiderio virtually invented portraiture of children, made popular a new type of extraordinary low relief, and gave traditional religious imagery an unprecedented delicacy of expression and tenderness of sentiment.
The sculptures of Desiderio da Settignano were among his favorite subjects, occupying four of the seven portfolios.
Represented are sculptures featured in the Gallery's exhibition Desiderio da Settignano: Sculptor of Renaissance Florence as well as works that cannot travel, such as the Funerary Monument of Carlo Marsuppini and the Tabernacle of San Lorenzo.

Born in Settignano, a village outside of Florence, where, according to legend, Michelangelo himself acquired his love of marble, Desiderio da Settignano continued the city's and his family's sculptural tradition.
In his twelve-year career, Desiderio created sculpture ranging from freestanding statues to crucifixes, but he is best known for portrait busts and elegant reliefs, especially of the Madonna and Child.
In his last works Desiderio renounced polishing: he simply filed the surface, giving the impression of seeing the marble through a light-filled haze.

Although himself neither innovator nor pioneer as regards this subject matter - parts most certainly played by Donatello and Luca della Robbia - Desiderio da Settignano could be compared to no one else in his time whenever he tried to catch the expression of spontaneity characteristic of children.
Like a number of similar statuettes of equally unaffected charm, this one is probably the portrait of a child conceived as the infant Jesus.
The Laughing Boy is considered to be the last work of Desiderio da Settignano, who died young in 1464.
