Design Research in Information Systems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Design research is yet another "lens" or set of analytical techniques and perspectives (complementing the Positivist and Interpretive perspectives) for performing research in IS. Design research involves the analysis of the use and performance of designed artifacts to understand, explain and very frequently to improve on the behavior of aspects of Information Systems.
The design researcher is thus a pragmatist (Pierce, 1931).
Bunge (1984) implies that design research is most effective when its practitioners shift between pragmatic and critical realist perspectives, guided by a pragmatic assessment of progress in the design cycle.  Purao (2002) presents a very rich elaboration on the perspective shifts that accompany any iterative design cycle.

Design research - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Design research emerged as a recognisable discipline in the 1960s, initially marked by a conference on Design methods at Imperial College, London, in 1963.
It built a network of practitioners and academics, and led to the founding of the Design Research Society (DRS) in 1967.
The DRS conference proceedings and subsequently the journal Design Studies are primary references charting the development of the discipline.

Cooper: Design Research: Why you need it
If the design team is truly immersed in the user research and models that come out of that research, it will be much easier for them to design a product that meets the needs of the users rather than themselves.
As your design team is faced with making decisions about what features to include in a product, and how to present those features to users, having intimate knowledge about at least one or two types of users will help them lean one way or the other.
Designers constantly anticipate design questions, and as they perform research, it's always with an eye towards how it can help them create a solid design in later phases of the process.

Design   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Research design provides the glue that holds the research project together.
A design is used to structure the research, to show how all of the major parts of the research project -- the samples or groups, measures, treatments or programs, and methods of assignment -- work together to try to address the central research questions.
You'll see that a major distinction is between the experimental designs that use random assignment to groups or programs and the quasi-experimental designs that don't use random assignment.
