Process for desizing and color fading garments - Patent 5366510
A method for simultaneously desizing and decolorizing a dyed fabric or dyed garment having a sizing and a reducible dye which comprises treating said fabric or garment with an effective amount of reducing agent in an aqueous bath whereby the fabric or garment is both desized and decolorized prior to any subsequent oxidation or bleaching.
Desizing is required where the fabrics or garments are to undergo further processing such as dyeing, printing, decolorization, treatment with a crosslinker, ozone treatments and the like.
The desizing and removal of color of denim garments generally requires two independent operations wherein the sizing is first removed and then the garment is treated chemically or physically to obtain removal of the color.

Environmentally Benign Preparatory Processes – Introducing a Closed-Loop System
Desizing was performed with amyloglucosidase, an enzyme capable of decomposing starches into mostly glucose.
The end-products of the enzymatic desizing process are various types of sugars and dextrins which are nontoxic, however, negatively impact the BOD of the wastewater.
This observation raised the question whether the still active scouring and desizing enzymes in combination had an inhibitory effect on the glucose oxidase and needed to be deactivated before glucose oxidase addition or whether the other sugars produced as degradation products lowered the activity of glucose oxidase.

Desizing is a process that removes chemical products, specifically warpsizes such as starch, from the surface of the fabric, which may inhibit the contact of other treatment chemicals such as cellulose enzymes or finishing chemicals (on greige fabrics) with the cotton fibers.
Once the desizing cycle is finished, the garments must be carefully cleaned because the pumice powder and stones may depisit in the folds and the pockets.
Biocell Desize must be kept in a tightly sealed container, at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, and away from direct sunlight.

The oxidant most suitable for direct use in the desizing bath is hydrogen peroxide, since it acts at high temperatures and, therefore, enables both mould to degrade and sizes to rapidly solubilize.
Desizing temperature The best results are obtained by maintaining desizing bath temperature in the range of 85°C to 95°C, except when treating acetate rayon and mixed wool fabrics, which only in certain cases support these temperatures (see chapters III and V.7).
Contact time between desizing bath and sized fabric Time of contact between bath and fibre is essential to establish whether a certain desizing treatment is possible on a system and prepare the best recipes according to the effective characteristics noted.

Desizing, irrespective of what the desizing agent is, involves impregnation of the fabric with the desizing agent, allowing the desizing agent to degrade or solubilise the size material, and finally to wash out the degradation products.
Fabrics containing water soluble sizes can be desized by washing using hot water, perhaps containing wetting agents and a mild alkali.

As a consequence of the sizing, the warp threads of the fabric are not able to absorb water or finishing agents to a sufficient degree.
But in most cases chemical breakdown of the size polymer in a separate desizing treatment is necessary in order to obtain the desired quality of the final fabric [2].

Cotton fabric is normally subjected to desizing and a number of research methods talk about desizing with hydrolytic and oxidative desizing agents, plasma treatment, etc. The rot steeping, acid desizing and enzymatic desizing are the conventional hydrolytic desizing techniques which are widely followed.
While desizing can be achieved in 1-3 mins, scouring takes 90 to 120 mins, in J box or 2-10 minutes in vapour locks machines.
Of all these methods, acid steeping, enzyme and bromite desizing and simultaneous scouring and desizing with persulphate are the cheapest as far as cost considerations are concerned.
