Desmodromic valves are those which are positively closed by a cam and leverage system, rather than relying on the more conventional springs to close the valves.
Desmodromic valve actuation has been applied to all but a few Ducati motorcycles.
It is derived from two Greek roots, desmos (controlled, linked) and dromos ((Education imparted in a series of lessons or class meetings) course, (A bar or bars of rolled steel making a track along which vehicles can roll) track).

As the rotational speed of the engine increases, the time taken for the spring to pull the valve shut can become significant, changing the timing and therefore the engine performance detrimentally.
One solution to this problem is the desmodromic valve timing system.
This uses a mechanical arrangement to both open and close the valve positively.

Smart’s victory was quite unexpected; as talented as he was, no one thought he had a chance against Agostini on his MV Agusta.
The bike Smart rode was a touring bike, a Gran Tourismo 750 and the first Ducati to have a desmodromic engine.
The Ducati GT 750 had the frame, suspension, engine and breaks of a production model touring bike, while Agostini’s MV Agusta was a 500cc built specifically for racing.
